Gotta love the intuitive ‘auto upgrade’ mechanism eh? I don’t think any other WordPress “feature” has caused me so many problems.

Also, the way WordPress messes with YouTube insertion code is infuriating. I use this generator to convert YouTube URLs to valid XHTML. And what does the WordPress editor do? It breaks it and makes a mockery of the “Valid XHTML 1.0” link on my sidebar.

It’s all very well saying “don’t hit the visual tab” before publishing because that will break it again, but it only takes a future edit while forgetting that fact to break the code again.

Really. Is there a way to stop WordPress modifying YouTube links without modifying core files? To say it’s a PITA is understatement of the year (certainly if you blog a lot of videos).

I’ve decided to deactivate it, and write a basic plugin myself instead. It’s way too complex – and apparently doing all kinds of things it doesn’t even need to do. Hell, I only want it to tell Twitter when I’ve posted a blog entry.

I was just about to post regarding this.

Every few minutes, this entry is appearing in my error log:

[Thu Aug 6 11:28:59 2009] [error] PHP Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to twitter.com:80 (Connection timed out) in /path/omitted/public_html/wp-includes/class-snoopy.php on line 1142

I’d love to know why it even needs to poll twitter.com, given that no posts have been made today, and Twitter is up to date with my WordPress posts. I don’t create blog or digest posts from tweets either, so what’s the deal with that?

I saw all the error entries and wondered if my webhost would be contacting me to ask me what’s going on.

Anybody?
