I’m having this same problem. Do you happen to be running the eventcalendar plugin?
Under the eventcalendar settings you have to select a category as the category to use to populate the calendar (ie. any post using this category will then be added to the calendar as far as I can tell). The only problem is, the category then becomes unavailable to use!
