OK I took a hint from your answer and switched to Visual view and found the extra spacing there. Very curious and annoying that WordPress would insert phantom characters even when the HTML has none. Important clue to remember.

That’s how I originally had it. I screwed around with the DIVs just to see if that made any difference. Obviously it didn’t. The original began with TABLE without anything before and that still included the Ps and BRs.

i reverted to TABLE at the very beginning of my page code. Still the phantom Ps and BRs appear in the render.
