In reply to: Comments disappeared on single postDid you ever resolve this? One of the three comments on a recent post of mine has totally disappeared. The email notification about the comment also disappeared from my inbox (and it’s not in the spam folder or trash). I contacted the commenter (a woman I know in real life, but not a registered site member); she says she didn’t do anything to remove her comment.

In reply to: [Simple Facebook Connect] I can no longer post to Facebook fAt the Facebook support forum on Stack Overflow (the closest thing that Facebook suggests as a help page for this issue), I got the advice that “… Facebook has disabled the importing of external feeds long time ago.” It appears, however, that other people are still successfully using Simple Facebook Connect for this purpose.

In reply to: Date-display errors in standard calendar widgetThanks for the good advice. I deactivated all plugins except for Akismet, and it didn’t resolve the problem.
Rather than ditch the PrimePress theme, I think I’ll just deep-six the calendar for now. ??

In reply to: Need to do the database changes for 2.8.5 to 2.9.2 upgradeAha! Fooled around some more, and discovered that my old theme was incompatible with 2.9.2.
I activated a newer theme, and everything seems to be working properly.

In reply to: Need to do the database changes for 2.8.5 to 2.9.2 upgradeThanks. Hmm… I thought I did that. My old version was db_version 11548. However, I tried that again and got a message that the database was upgraded. Thanks for telling me that was the right thing to try!
So far, so good. I can see that the database structure in MySQL has changed.
Unfortunately the public-side links to categories and comments still don’t work. I have to think the problem is in the database somewhere — that something isn’t pointing to the proper destination. I guess maybe it’s time to reimport the old database, then try the “upgrade” step again.

In reply to: Dashboard broken after upgrading to wp 2.8This thread is discouraging to me…
I upgraded to 2.8 last month, using the auto-upgrade plug-in. At first, everything was fine. Then the visual editor stopped working. That was annoying, but today my dashboard broke. What I see on wp-admin looks remarkably like https://metalseinen.com/PubImages/4-1.JPG
The gradual degradation of WordPress is the strangest part of this. I haven’t tried to do anything fancy with WordPress since I installed 2.8 — I just use the program (to add the occasional post, read my comments, and review my spam). Probably the fanciest thing I’ve done was to add a couple of additional spam-words to the moderation list.
To address this, I’ve disabled all plugins except Akismet, but that hasn’t helped any. (Other than Akismet, I was only running the backup plugin and the auto-upgrade plugin. I don’t want to lose Akismet, as I’m getting a lot of spam these days, which Akismet is effectively blocking.) I started to replace WP files, but the network administrator on the system I was using blocked my FTP access before I could finish the job.
Here’s hoping that replacing the wp-admin and wp-includes directories does the trick!

In reply to: No Long Receiving Comments by EmailI had this type of problem a couple of months back, not limited to WordPress and not correlated to any software charges. My experience may or may not help someone else.
What happened was that I stopped getting all auto-generated messages from my domain, as well as auto-generated messages from a totally unrelated online forum. The wordpress messages were arriving in the mailbox on my webhost (where all received messages are stored temporarily), but I was not receiving them in the Comcast e-mail account where that mail is forwarded (including Comcast’s spam folder).
I concluded that Comcast was systematically blocking this type of auto-generated mail. I contacted Comcast and did not get any satisfactory results/answers, but after a few weeks I started receiving the e-mail again.

In reply to: How to display children of a categoryI have successfully displayed children of categories on my WordPress blog by using a work-around in which I named the categories hierarchically.
In the situation that harveypooka described, the categories would become Projects > Africa and Projects > Sri Lanka.

In reply to: My dashboard disappeared!Harrumph. I had this problem after my long-delayed upgrade to WP 2.3.1.
After reading this thread, I deleted the index.php file from the plugins directory, then clicked on that Dashboard link on the upper left, and got an error message! Do I need to put a different index.php file in the plugins directory?

In reply to: How to change number of posts that display on a category page?1. I finally found the default setting under Options – Reading (I don’t know how many times I had already looked there but failed to see it).
2. I still would like to be able to display x posts, then give the viewer a link to “see previous x posts”….

In reply to: How to change number of posts that display on a category page?1. Thanks. I found some posts about that plugin, but I cannot find the plugin. https://mattread.com/projects/wp-plugins/custom-query-string-plugin/ gets me to an announcement “Project No Longer Supported.” The plugin itself is downloadable from https://drunkenmonkey.org/user/archive/, but I see no documentation there. Also, I don’t want to customize the number of items that display at one time, I merely want to increase the default.
2. I think this is an issue with my installed theme. When I display posts and scroll down to the bottom of the page, I want to see a link that takes people to previous posts that fit the same parameters (previous posts if they are viewing the main page, previous posts in the category if they are viewing a category). However, at the bottom of the page there is no navigation information…
