In reply to: null link not omitting top level menu itemsYes, you are right – it is using SiteOrigin. I’ve never before worked from a template, and frankly would rather just build a site from scratch – that has enough headaches, but I pretty much know how to resolve those!
I don’t see any place to edit navigation other than designating page order – Assigning that an order or changing it to zero or leaving that space blank doesn’t seem to make much difference.

In reply to: null link not omitting top level menu itemsI think I’m still missing something. My ‘This is a test’ was created to try things not in the very limited documentation on this subject (and of course I can not find that documentation again! I recall that it said to create a custom link with # (a null link) as the URL. This is then supposed to omit the top level item from the sidebar menu.
@howdy-mcgee – you very correctly identified that the URL on my test pages didn’t follow the structure of /top level page/child page. That was an experiment when following the directions included the top level/parent pages in the side bar menu. So, if you go to Connections and click on ‘Join us’ you’ll see that top level page ‘Connections’ on the sidebar menu. If you click on that, it goes to a page with no content other than the title.
It seems that having these top level pages as nothing other than placeholders or headers is the latest in setting up a website for people with a variety of technical skills – many people don’t notice that there are other pages under that top level if it links to an active page.
So, any other advice on how to do this woul dbe appreciated.

In reply to: [Gallery Manager] Fancy gallery – image proportions? For the lite version I figured out a solution. I resized and reloaded all of the images and the thumbnails were proportional. This fix doesn’t carry over with a switch to the pro version. I’m still working on that, but understand that the pro version support is done directly through Dennis Hoppe. As far as the Lite version goes, this is resolved, and I hope that my experience will help someone else.

In reply to: [Gallery Manager] Fancy gallery – image proportions?Hi Dennis – I understand that in most cases the thumbnails should be the same size and dimensions. In showing artwork, I want the thumbnails to be a mini version of the actual painting. To turn a rectangle into a square either distorts the work or requires selecting a small part of a large work so that the feel of the complete piece is misrepresented.
So, the Columbine and Daylilies are actually correct, although it would be better if the height of the Daylilies matched the other thumbnais. The Twinleaf and Red Gerbera have cropped off part of tops and/or bottoms of those picture, when I’d like the entire picture to be included.
If you look under the Landscape gallery, the winter stream is shown as a square thumbnail, when it is really a small panorama and I’d like to have the represented in the thumbnail.

In reply to: [Gallery Manager] Fancy gallery – image proportions?Thank you for your response, Dennis. I delayed in answering you, as I needed my webhost to unhide my website. It might help for you to visit it at https://ellentoddartist.com/wp/, especially as I may have 3 issues – 2 of which are related.
On the website, look at the portfolio subpage Landscapes and compare this with the subpage botanicals. I may have a problem with the uploaded image size. Under Botanicals, you’ll see that the thumbnail for “Columbine” is sized & proportioned correctly. Under Landscapes, the “Winter Stream” thumbnail is not.
Also, under seasonal, you’ll see that again, the first image thumbnail is cropped, when I prefer to show the whole image. And, when you click on that to open the image it is larger than the screen. Is this another size limit issue?
And, lastly, I only seem to be able to create 3 galleries when I need more than that. Is that an issue of the free Lite vs paid version?
I have tried many of the available portfolio and gallery plugins and find yours to be the closest to what I’m seeking. If we get the size issues resolved, then it is exactly what I want, and it is easy to use. Thank you for the thought and attention to detail you’ve obviously put into developing this.

In reply to: new variant on no thumbnails in 3.9.1And, yet more information. When I tried to use one of the images I uploaded, in a post, it says that there is no image date and I should re-upload the image. Yet the image uploaded by my server host works just fine.
It’s a good thing I made this post private as his image has nothing at all to do with my website!

In reply to: Media uploads give "HTTP error" and no thumbnails after 3.8 upgradeHello – I upgraded to WP 3.8 a week ago, as I was hoping to do a major redesign of my site. I have been unable to load images with thumbnails ever since then. I have spent at least 6-8 hours poring over other posts on the support forum and searching through Google for solutions. Keith has also spent a lot of time on this. Can someone please review his post and the steps we’ve taken. Have we omitted something? Have we done a step incorrectly?
My site can be found here:
https://ellentoddartist.com/wp/It is currently fairly worthless – some of the images that previously showed, are not visible in the twentyfourteen theme, and I hesitate to change to another theme with a gallery layout until we have the thumbnail issue resolved.
Any help in resolving this will be greatly appreciated.

In reply to: Media uploads without creating thumbnails in 3.8I am still trying to find a solution to my problem with uploading images. Before upgrading to WP 3.8 I was able to upload images with thumbnails Since I upgraded WP to 3.8. Now I get a generic message of “http error” with nothing to identify what the error is. The image is there, but with no thumbnail in the media library. In the 2013 theme, the image will show up – but larger than I want it. With most other themes, it’s not there at all.
I have tried: deactivating all plugins, re-installing WP 3.8, and using the 2013 theme – that didn’t help.
And – additional steps taken by my server host:
I’m the server host for EllenGTodd. Some more details: after the upgrade to 3.8, image upload wasn’t working at all, as many (not all) upgraders have found. Following a tip elsewhere on this forum I manually edited the database to fix the upload_path (in the options table) — it had gone blank.
After that we could upload photos. But still no thumbnails were generated.
Again following a tip elsewhere in this forum, I looked at the ImageMagick library that PHP uses. These files in the /wp-includes directory:
class-wp-image-editor-gd.php
class-wp-image-editor-imagick.php
class-wp-image-editor.phpall had different sizes than the equivalent files in a 3.6.1 install. I moved them aside and copied in the corresponding files from 3.6.1. Result: still no thumbnails (so I restored the 3.8 files).
Can anyone provide further assistance on this? Thank you!

In reply to: Media uploads without creating thumbnails in 3.8If you read my original post (I am sorry about the duplicate post – I did explain why I felt it was necessary) I have already deactivated all plug-ins. I was able to create thumbnails prior to upgrading to 3.8.
I’ve also read and tried every solution I could find on previous threads about this issue. Again – please see the original thread – I wish that one had been left open and this one closed – as there is more information in the other. My server host checked ImageMagick, checked temp files, checked php.
I have someone who wants to view my artwork, and I’ve got a totally unusable website right now, and hope that we can find a solution.
Thank you very much
