Thanks for that: a re-examination of the settings has shown me a solution. I’ll write it here in case anyone else has the problem in the future.

The plugin is wpaudioplayer. In settings–general is a tick box ‘Replace all links to mp3 files’; untick this box and you’ll get both a download link by title, and a player icon under that. Not quite the way I wanted it [I’d like the order reversed] but it’s much better than I had.

Now I only have to go over each of my 270 posts of files to make the changes to remove the image-links I have used until now.

Maybe what I wrote is unclear, so I’ll try to be more clear.

Currently people can listen to a file via an inline mp3 player, which is fine.

Lots of other sites allow this, but they also allow the downloading of the same file to people’s computers. I can’t do that [unless I bury the link inside an image].

Currently, if I paste a link in a post, the autoplayer takes over when the link is clicked; the right-click-to-download doesn’t appear at all; adobe prevents it.

The remedy may be very basic, but I’d really like to know, please, how I can have BOTH the autoplay AND the ability to download.

I have been using ‘visual’, but on your suggestion I tried HTML and removed the many spacer repeats I found there, which seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for that; I am grateful for a solution to a hard problem. I’m glad I was able to fix it without having to code, since I don’t know how. Your help is appreciated.

I must say that I’d be glad to see the WordPress developers give some serious attention to the many bugs** that are built into the Visual word processor feature, as these bugs have been present for a long time now through several versions.

** – alignment issues, this image/text problem of inserting unwanted spacers, the cursor not lining up properly with the text, lack of drag and drop, plugins that show code instead of wygiwys, editing box too narrow, etc.

I can add a little extra info to my OP that I’ve since discovered.

I’ve found that of the two categories in my site, audio and articles, the cloud will only cloud tags that are in the Audio category. I haven’t reached 45 words yet. I’ll have a look at plugins as suggested (thank you), but if anyone has an idea why the cloud is reading tags from the Audio category but not from the Articles category, I’d be interested to hear; I expect it shall turn out to be something I’ve done wrong. Thanks.

I have been here looking for help, and am grateful to have received some, and say Thank You.

I have looked for the rules and haven’t found them. Even if a link to them is provided after this post, it seems to me they are not easily found.

samboll’s reaction implies I have bumped in other threads: I have not. I’m not aware my post of ‘Anyone?’ in this thread (which is since deleted) is a bump, either. Maybe it is, and I never knew it. I just wanted a response to a current question.

However, since two of you seem to believe I have broken a rule, I must assume I have, in ignorance, and apologize for it. I’m a nice person when you get to know me.

Thank you, songdogtech, for replying. YOU have some courtesy.

I get the impression from Todd’s post several spaces up that he doesn’t come here anymore, which is a pity. I don’t want to have to jump through all the hoops of registering to join his forum just to make a suggestion.

I like this neat little player, and it was easy for a newbie to install and use. Thank you.

I want to add a vote for the inclusion of a Stop button. The reason is that my audio files are speeches and can go for 30-60 minutes. People might click for a listen, then decide they want to stop and move on. However, using the Pause button doesn’t stop the mp3 from continuing to download, and people might be annoyed, and certainly slowed down, while 15 megs finds it’s way into their computers when they don’t want it. The only way I currently can see to stop the download from continuing is to navigate away from the page.

So might a Stop button be worth considering? Thanks.

Okay, I’ve found a solution myself, but I’ll note it here in case someone else has the same question someday.

There’s a button in the Page composition page called Insert/Edit Embedded Media. Highlight the widget and click that button. Go to Advanced, select the alignment you want (left, top, whatever), put some numbers in the V-Space and H-Space (8, in my case) that will give some space between the text and the widget, and you should be good to go.
