I finally solved the problem, so for anyone else’s benefit. I’ll explain what I did.
Under: Settings/Permalinks, at the very bottom of the page, I found some code and an explanation that it needed to be placed in the .htaccess file, or that file needs to be made writable–which mine wasn’t.
This code is apparently essential to allowing for any updates or rewrites. Sounded important to me, and it solved the problem. (So why is it not a little more prominently displayed?)
