In reply to: Preview Draft doesn't workProblem solved! (I think.)
In the site’s General Settings, the Site Address had a www. in front of the URL, and the WordPress Address did not. I removed the www from the Site Address so it matches the WordPress Address, and that seems to have resolved both problems.

In reply to: Preview Draft doesn't workMore information:
It seems that this problem probably has something to do with WordPress forgetting that I have admin access. I discovered that using Internet Explorer, the preview problem goes away (I normally use Firefox, sometimes Safari or Chrome.) But here’s another clue: when logged in with IE, the dark gray top bar saying “Howdy, admin” appears. I’m not seeing that top bar when using my other browsers.
Another related issue is that when using Firefox or Safari, after entering my admin userid & password on the login page I usually get cycled back to the login page again. Sometimes if I repeat this two or three times it will eventually take me to the WP admin panel.
Figuring this seems like a cookie problem, I deleted cookies from my WP site from Firefox, but that hasn’t changed anything.
I manage several other WP sites and none of them exhibit this behavior. I’ve never had trouble logging in as admin with any of them, nor have I had any problem previewing posts.

In reply to: Smart quotes garbled after updateYeah, that’s what I’m looking at doing now. Running a series of SQL updates on the posts table and hoping I get all of the bad punctuation that way. It’s more than just the curly double-quotes, it’s also apostrophes and things like long dashes and ellipses characters. Ick.

In reply to: Smart quotes garbled after updateThanks, esmi…
I have deactivated all plugins (and verified that the active_plugins option is set to a:0:{} ) and switched the theme to an unmodified “Twenty Ten” and yet the problem persists.
I realize that going from 2.9 to 3.5.1 was a big jump, but that’s actually what the “Upgrading WordPress Extended” article suggests.
I don’t think there was damage to the database, because as I mentioned, when I examine the post contents via phpMyAdmin I can see that the text of the posts is exactly the same on the updated site as it was on the old site. Both sites have the “garbled” version of quotes and other special punctuation appearing when viewed through phpMyAdmin, but somehow the old site displays quotes properly while the new one doesn’t.
Still mystified…

In reply to: Smart quotes garbled after updateI first did a manual upgrade from WP 2.6.3 to 2.7. Then an automatic update to 2.9, then another automatic update to 3.5.1.
I didn’t notice the smart quotes problem until some time after the final update to 3.5.1 was done, so I don’t know at what point the problem appeared. It might have been present in 2.7 or 2.9 and I just didn’t happen to see it.
In any case, as I mentioned, the representation of the quotes in the database has not changed; only the way they appear when viewed through WordPress.

In reply to: [BackUpWordPress] [Plugin: BackUpWordPress] backup_warningsFollow-up: I just did another “backup now” on the same site, and this time it didn’t generate any warnings.
The only difference, as far as I know, is that this time I excluded one path that contained 300+ MB of audio files, so the resulting ZIP file is much smaller.
Okay, I see what I was missing. This plugin encodes addresses in HTML mailto tags only; it does not encode email addresses that are simply part of a plain text post or page.
I think your documentation should make this clear. The description of this plugin says it will encode any email address in a post or page. It should say it will encode any email address in a MAILTO tag.
I think you mean most calendar fields are NOT duplicated. Yeah, I installed Duplicate Post too, and found that it’s not much help for calendar entries.
…Or, is there a way to COPY or duplicate an existing event? That way, at least we wouldn’t have to fill in all the repetitive information every week.
I notice that the Ajax Event Calendar has such a copy feature.
When I first installed it as a sidebar widget, the form field for entering an email address stretched out beyond the width of my sidebar. But then I went to the admin settings for this plugin and found this option unchecked:
“Use default style for Navayan Subscribe form on Page, Post, Widget?”
I checked that option, and that solved the problem. The form field now fits comfortably in the sidebar.

In reply to: “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”What does a trackback or pingback look like? These things I’m getting look exactly like comments. The email I get asking me to moderate them refers to them as comments. If I approve one, it appears along with other comments and is indistinguishable from a comment. Can it walk like a comment and talk like a comment and still not be a comment?
My WordPress blog is at https://thinkofit.com/wordpress
