    Dear Simon,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write that all out!

I don’t know how to include a screen shot here, but let me make the choices above clearer:
    Right column:
    Structure only
    Structure and data
    Data only
    Export to XML format
    LaTeX
    Select All / Unselect All

By default, Structure Only is checked. Do you think I should check structure and data?

    Right column:
    Add ‘drop table’
    Complete inserts
    Extended inserts
Enclose table and field names with backquotes
Save as file ( “zipped” “gzipped” )
I understand there should be a button marked MYSQL, but there is not. There is no compression box, but it does say plain file, which I assume is unzipped.

When I hit go, it saves it as a sql. When I open up the sql, of course it is a mess, and about HALF of it is not my blog posts, it’s all this info about WordPress, tons of stuff like development, how WordPress works, many many pages that aren’t in my blog. Is this how it’s supposed to be?

Does anyone know how to backup this version of phpMyAdmin? I don’t know what the words above mean, so I don’t know which ones to tick off. Should I just tick off all the boxes? (not the documentation box, which is at the bottom.)
    Thank you.

Len, thank you so much for replying. I do understand some of Codex, but thanks for pointing out this on Tamba! Tamba is great!

But even for Tamba, my checkboxes do not match theirs. I didn’t think to cut and paste my check boxes before, but here they are, and you can see they are different from those on Codex and Tamba:

    Structure only
    Structure and data
    Data only
    Export to XML format
    LaTeX
    Select All / Unselect All
    Add ‘drop table’
    Complete inserts
    Extended inserts
Enclose table and field names with backquotes
Save as file ( “zipped” “gzipped” )
    Documentation

I’m not sure which to tick off!

Okay, I figured it out. Hope this helps someone else.

Go to Manage, Posts, Edit, and on the right of each post is a box that says Post Status, and you can check off Private for each individual post.

I don’t see a way to make the whole blog private. I have 2.2.

I think it’s good that people give answers.

    HELP!

I have a blog I’ve been working on privately. Somehow, someone found it, because they came to my other blog.

How do I make this in progress blog private until I’m ready for it to go public?

In this case, the Codex is not my friend, because the page moshu pointed to is empty.

You could be right, IcelandDream. Feedburner tells me I have a few subscribers, but the number of subscribers changes each day, whereas my number of User Subscribers in Admin stays the same (except when I get a new one.)

So I thought MY subscribers (in Admin) might be for something else, like people who Registered. (and again, I don’t know why they did that.)

I’m confused, too. I don’t have the plugins that PennyRay has, but I have a handful of people who have “subscribed.” I don’t require people to log in to make comments. Why did they subscribe? What are they waiting for from me? Is this only so I have their emails if I ever send out a newsletter, which I don’t plan to do?

I looked up subscribe on Codex and that does not help me.

THANK YOU, HandySolo, for a reply.

I found Options-Discussion in my Admin pages. They are checked off. I have never gotten a trackback about me, however, and a couple of bloggers linked to me a couple of times. Which I found out only because I have Sitemeter on my blog.

Also, how do I test if my trackback to the OTHER person is working?

I do not see this in Codex.

Does anyone know how to enable trackbacks and pings?

Does anyone know how to enable trackbacks and pings?

Does anyone know how to enable trackbacks? Do you really want me to keep writing a blog with no feedback whatsoever???

I just remembered that htaccess is somewhere in my server. Been a while since I had to go deep. Questions on others remain.

Doesn’t WordPress automatically have trackbacks? Since I don’t get any comments, it would be nice to have a trackback, or to send one to someone I’m linking to.

    What does yourownrandomname.php mean, author.php?

And can you tell me the name of the file htaccess is in?

Or is there a plugin for trackbacks? I have 2.1

Srikat, MANY THANKS! No, it wasn’t there (the author posts part), so I copied your line and now it’s fine. I don’t know how it disappeared, but WordPress has its mysteries…

Thanks again for such a speedy answer!
