Did you update the plugin to the latest version? Did you update your WP install to 4.9.5?

Those that have, from what I have read, no longer are getting spam subscriptions.

Not in my case:
I still cannot sign up for email from the widget in FireFox (latest version).
(invalid email address)
Although I can sign up in Chrome
both of these are on the desktop

Site is updated to 4.9.5
and Plugin is current

If I have just 4 main groups, can some of the categories be the same name?

Group name: News & Crime
category: crime

and

Once I do have these groups in the db, when making the sign up form for the widget sidebar they will then display?
At this point I think we will just try and get the new subscribers to pick what category they want, then down the road get the currently subscribed folks into what ever category they want.

Emails are being sent out

Ok I was trying to set this up today:

“Then you need to create your groups in email subscribers.”
How the heck do you do that?
If i go to Group Selector – I get a form to fill for the sidebar.. so I entered the categories after the Public. Then added the widget and none of the new categories showed, just Public.

If I go to new subscriber and sign up, I have greyed out Select Group & Select Status.

Just where am I to go to add a few simple groups?
And yes they are all categories in WP.

Confusions mounts.

adding to this is the new update now that I think does not work as even the simple sign up email widget doesn’t work.

Well I updated and now the form to sign up does not even work?
This is true on current Firefox verison.
Can sign up on Chrome

This is getting old.

Again I wonder if the paid version is having these same problems?

Well what I get using the Subscribe form is : invalid email address
I am using mine so I know that is not the case.
I will connect with editor to check to see if any subscribers are now getting posts.
Very Frustrating.

I added a Display widgets plugin to hide show the widgets.
Still think a separate page template would be cleaner and less confusing.
Marking this as resolved.

I too am hoping to wake up to an updated plugin ..
