But we don’t want to have them be registered on the site, just be able to have a drop down to subscribe to a ‘category’ or ‘group’ or the whole site via a widget on the sidebar.
email subscribers plugin does this but it is just too big and buggy for our needs really. I was hoping for a small simple plugin.. we do not do news letters or spam our visitors, this is a news site I am working on.

Good to know, experimenting and trying to learn this block stuff.

If you go to about 9 minutes in and watch for a bit, some really quite fun stuff is shown, but by seasoned developers using keyboard short cuts and lots of additional plugins to style into the blocks..

I too am really amazed that such a raw – rough thing was released with out decent How To’s for non-developers, but that’s just my opinion

Also take a look at Block plugins, there are several that do allow you to color and change text etc

For me, I am coming into this kicking and screaming.. I think wp should of waited until they had a fully functional wysiwyg page editor, like those they are trying to compete with. And they should of created a detailed how to, but that’s just my opinion. I already see that using this will mean dozens of more plugins to deal with just to write a simple post.

And just a thought on the WP push for block editor, to compete with other drag&drop software, why did they not just do a fork of WP for those who wanted to use that method of posting? Seems they are abandoning (at least in principle) many who came to WP in the beginning.

Any way as WP5 is not a security release, I am waiting awhile before updating most of my sites. I have the Classic Editor installed already on those sites, I have yet to play with the Disable Gutenberg plugin, but do trust anything that Jeff Star does.

Inquiring minds and all that.. I wonder the same.

Well, please save the release for January 2019! Holiday times are not good times for these major releases.
