I see if I go into the media settings and turn off automatic embeds and then send a Subcribe2 preview to myself that it just sends the link, which is fine. That would be like me sending a link to my friend by email.
It’s too bad though. It would be nice if the site could display the embed, but since the actual content stored in the database is just the link that the email notifier sent the link. Best of both worlds.
Maybe there is another notifier which can do that?
Anyway, thanks,
doug
Hi, Matty.
Well, what I’m doing is just posting a link to the video, not the embed code. It then appears embedded at my site automatically.
Is there a way to get WordPress to just send out the link I put in the post?
Thanks,
doug
In my case the author links goes to my self-hosted blog, but to a missing page “It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching, or one of the links below, can help.”
I tried disconnecting and reconnecting but it doesn’t help.
It’s trying to go to https://mydomain.com/?author=1 which gets re-directed to https://mydomain.com/author/DougLerner/ which doesn’t exist.
Is there some URL-related setting I can change to make the link work?
Thanks,
doug
I think the notifications are being generated by Jetpack. Maybe they are not?

Peter, I wanted to thank you for pointing Postie out to me.
It works perfectly! It properly receives and embeds images and YouTube videos. The settings are very easy. And you don’t even need to set a cron job – it checks automatically every so-many minutes.
Thanks!

In reply to: Aligning photos in posts? Thanks, people.
It seems I just needed to click on the big media icon in my post to find those options you mentioned.
Thanks!

Thanks. I had looked at GerryWorks before – it doesn’t handle attachments.
I had not seen Postie. I’ll check that out.
Thanks,
doug
Thank you for your post, peter.
Thanks for checking out the plugins. Those seem to be outgoing emails. What I’m really look for are ways to post and reply by email. In other words, incoming emails.
Thanks,
doug
Well, my main question here was how to get some needed features at my self-hosted wordpress site (douglerner.net)
But it seems the post via-email support is very primitive (no image attachments, no tagging via email, etc.).
So maybe my self-hosted wordpress site is unworkable.
Thanks,
doug
I also use FaceBook – but messages get lost in the news feed flow and tumble. For example, I was in the hospital 2 weeks ago with a heart attack. I would say that 98% of my FaceBook friends don’t know about that because they overlooked it in the newsfeed with everything else going on. Then it flies by and is scrolled off the end of the page. No notifications of my post go out. And the information is lost.
But my Posterous subscribers definitely know because they each received an email notification. And if they return to my blog it’s all there. Because it is MY blog, not just a newsfeed mixture of posts from all their friends.
I also have a self-hosted site. I created it the other day and imported everything from here to it (douglerner.net). It looks fine, but post via-email functionality is extremely limited. You can’t post image attachments. And tags are not handled. In fact, all I could get to work was posting the subject of my message – it didn’t even post the body. So post via email works better at wordpress.com. I looked around for some plugins for this but didn’t notice any.
Thanks,
doug

In reply to: Post via email, tags and formatting questionDoing some extra searching, it appears the post via email isn’t even designed to deal with photo attachments. The fact it didn’t even get the text of the email is also disturbing, but the lack of photo attachment handling is a real show-stopper.
So now it’s a question of competing show-stoppers. The problems I had at wordpress.com, or this problem. They are all problems. ??
I guess no place is perfect.
I do want to leave Posterous though, before they disappear.

In reply to: Post via email, tags and formatting questionNever mind. I installed and tried it.
1. Image attachments are not received and included with the post.
2. Tags are not set.
In fact, all that was received was the post title. Not even the text of the message was posted!
Bummer. I will go plugin hunting. Maybe there is something that does this?
Thanks,
doug
Facebook and Google+ are so completely different from WordPress as far as presence, notifications of new post, reply, search, customization, branding, features and, well, everything, I don’t see how they can even be compared. It’s not even apples and oranges. It’s apples and elephants. ??
Plus it wouldn’t help with ANY of the problems I mentioned above.
Thanks for the thought though!

In reply to: Import doesn't seem to be finishing – I thinkEsmi, this is working great. The learning curve is very low, and there seems to be a plugin for just about everything I can imagine. Don’t like the default tags cloud? Switch it out for another widget. Want to expand embeds? Add a widget. Fun!
I’m off to look for ways to easily import my subscribers from Posterous now.
Thanks again for your help.

In reply to: Import doesn't seem to be finishing – I thinkJust to confirm, at both douglerner.wordpress.com and the imported douglerner.net there are exactly 708 posts going back to 2007.
So there were no replicates.
I just needed to run the importer over and over again each time it timed out until it finally finished.
