Okay, I tinkered with the faulty code and now I’m getting a parse error for a different line. I just have to learn how to code.

Ah, okay – I’m getting closer. I renamed the .rtf file as a .php file and now WordPress is seeing it. I’m now getting a parse error message, but at least the programs reading the code. Even if it *is* screwed up lol.

Hey, esmi – thanks for the help. I put the template in the current theme’s folder but still no joy. The problem’s probably one of two things – either WordPress doesn’t read .rtf files created in Wordpad, or I’m just not seeing the button to click on to choose the new template. You know, when I go into Quick Edit, there’s a drop down called ‘Template’ and the only option listed is ‘Default Template’. Is that the bit that’s supposed to list the new template if I’ve done everything else right?

    Okay, here’s what I tried:

1 Created a custom page template by copying page.php and adding the appropriate code at the top.

2 Created a folder in Themes with the custom page template in it. (I also put the same folder with the same custom page template into the actual theme I’m using – Sliding Doors.)

3 Went into Dashboard and in Pages clicked Edit. Selected the page I’d created previously.

Okay, at this point, I’d like to refer to what Help says:

“Once you have created the Page Template and placed it in your Theme’s directory, it will be available as a choice when you create or edit a Page. (Note: when creating or editing a Page, the Page Template option does not appear unless there is at least one template defined in the above manner.)”

My problem is that the new template doesn’t seem to appear as a choice, neither in Edit nor in Quick Edit.

What am I doing wrong? Did I put the new template in the wrong place?

Hi Shane – why would the latest version help things to load faster?

Auto-upgrade is the one in Dashboard?

When you click on the down arrow beside ‘Appearance’ you should get a drop-down menu consisting of four items:

    Themes
    Widgets
    Editor
    Add New Themes

If you don’t get that, something’s wrong. If you do get that, click on Editor, and it’ll display the code for the theme.

    More trouble than it’s worth?

Wow, this place is throbbing. I’ve seldom been in forum like this, where it’s so much like an airport or a subway station, and so little like a community.

I read about it in the ‘getting to know you’ section of the training modules on this site. It’s a plugin that lets you meld the dashboard with this site, if I’m not mistaken. I mean, I can open the site in another tab in my browser, but it *would* be useful to have it right on the admin page of WordPress.
