I want to try option one first, as I’m already maintaining quite a few plugins on this website.

So if I understand correctly, I can set up a function that gets called when a certain URL is visited (this will be the return URL after payment). With the query params passed to that URL (name, email etc), I should be able to programmatically create the user and assign a membership level. That sounds exactly like what I’m looking for.

Where can I find the docs that explain how to create this user and assign a membership level? I only found this blog article concerning API usage:

Sure! I did just notice though, that when my admin section is in French, the text doesn’t get translated yet. I get:

I found the problem, it had nothing to do with PMP.
The domain from the ‘FROM’ e-mail address in the WooCommerce > Emails settings was not the same as the one where the website is running.

I have the exact same issue on version 7.10.58
When I activate the plugin and click to go to the settings, i get an entirely blank page, no body content and no errors in the console.

ok, so it has to be the category ID – figured it out.
that wasn’t clearly documented as far as i can tell.
