Is this the area that you’re referring to — https://i.imgur.com/4EVpNrz.png? If so, you should be able to edit this under ‘Appearance > Menus’, depending on the theme you’re using.

The Argent theme provides a bit of a tutorial on the WordPress.com page here – https://wordpress.com/themes/argent/. If you look under the ‘Portfolio’ section, you’ll see where it lays out how to post a Portfolio item to the site. From there, you’ll be able to add the portfolio area to the homepage via the WordPress customizer.
