In reply to: Creating New Directory Outside of Root (to install secure files plugin)your directories are linked to a URL (your domain name). If you make a directory called “files” or “whatever,” but don’t do more with it, then “most likely” that directory is simply NOT visible online. Ask your host, they are there to help you. I have the secure files plugin working and it’s really nice. Also, download manager allows the same functionality.
Just make a directory called /home/username/files, make sure it’s not accessible via the web (but only via ftp) and put that into the Secure Files Directory.
Then FTP some files into that directory and watch them appear. Use the >> to get the link to put into posts and pages. Neato. Then test. Log in via one browser, see if you can downlaod.
Stay logged out via another browser (like use Firefox and Safari or Opera or IE or whatever).
Then watch the link not work when you are not logged in.
Neato ??
I think download manager even allows you to redirect folks who happen to browse your download link. ??

In reply to: Custom Widgets Does a better job. Sorry Widget Logic!I just LOOOOOOVE widget logic. It’s just a rock and roll plugin. I mean, it’s taken me a while to learn how to state my widget display “rules” in “logic” that WP can understand, but I’ve created a unique experience for visitors vs. logged in members with page by page and post by post selections with widget logic. I don’t know if other plugins can do this, but I am a big fan and I am very very grateful that widget logic exists.

In reply to: multiple themescurrently searching on something similar. wanting to use themes as page templates. thinking about templatepath…
there’s got to be a way to do this, for pages at least if not pages and posts.
Raw Code Injector is totally awesome…

In reply to: Plugin: Remove wpautop, wptexturize with a shortcodeWow, talk about savin’ my rear! Thanks so much for this plugin…there’s another one that I tried, and it caused conflicts because it disabled wpautop() everywhere.
Man, it looks like it’s working right now…hope it stays that way through WP Updates and such. Talk about literally the most annoying aspect of WP for me! Such a simple little thing…so many hours of pain!
Want a couple bucks?

In reply to: Generate Test EnvironmentOK, don’t have XAMPP and don’t have a windows box.
I guess it’s about where things point to and how WP is coded.
How about this:
1) Make TestWP DB2) Copy
domainname.com/livesite
onto
domainname.com/testsite(all plugins move along)
2) surf to testsite and switch the DB toTestWP
3) Export content from livesite and import into testsite
Would that work?
Another question is, can I just copy all of my plugins over even from livesite? What I mean here is, do I need to install each plugin from the source files or can I use the ones currently “enabled” at my livesite, by just copying those files on my livesite server? Just that question could save a bundle of time.
Cheers,

In reply to: Generate Test EnvironmentTheme test drive just lets you test themes. I’m talking about a complete replicated environment with a new DB and everything. You could use it as a backup or to create a test environment. A lot of all-night, sweaty, nervous, “my site is BROKEN OMG!” situations would be saved, and the collective anxiety of WP users would be significantly reduced. Yes, we’d be an even happier, more relaxed, and of course, mega-cool bunch!

DainisForum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Afraid to update to 2.8Because that would take a really really really long time. I think the automatic backup/test environment generator should create a new database and complete install at the push of a button.
The way the plugin would work is:
1) Set all FTP and DB settings
2) Press “replicate”
3) Wait and then you have an exact copy of your WP site installed at a new location with a separate DB.
4) Breathe a sigh of relief…do all your testing in the test environment, keep the replication as a backup…etc. Here is my original thread voicing this desire:
