  • I hope it’s okay if I use this thread, since I have a similar problem. I try using Auto-update, but it doesn’t work. On the first try, it simply told me “update failed”, on the second try it said “unable to locate root directory”. I do know how to upgrade manually (as I’ve done that for years), but I simply love the auto-upgrade ?? Were there any changes made to the upgrade in 2.8 (the version I’m currently running) that could possibly prevent an update, although it was possible for me to update to 2.8 (and all previous versions since the introduction of this feature) automatically?

edit: Just noticed that I get a similar error when trying to update one of the Plugins: Unable to locate WordPress Plugin directory.

fyi: I managed to resolve the issue by deleting the plugin folder. After that the update went smooth. I deactivated all plugins, re-uploaded my plugin folder and activated them one by one – turns out it was a problem with the WPG2-plugin. Thankfully it’s already been updated by now, and everything is running again.

If I log in, I get automatically redirected to the upgrade-page.

I’ll have to shamefully admit that I didn’t deactive all plugins, because I was in a hurry (I know, bad excuse, but that’s how things go). However, I’m not running too many plugins, only Hello Dolly, Backup (the one included in the standard WP download), Akismet, the WordPress Gallery 2 Plugin (WPG2) & something called wp-quotes, which is an additional database table that displays random quotes on my main page.

Deleting & Uploading as per Upgrade Guide unfortunately leads to the same results.
