Thanks for posting these questions to support and not as a review. I am happy to respond to all of them.First off, I do apologize for the bad experience. The issues most likely have something to do with your install but nevertheless, we try to make the plugin as easy to use as possible and there were clearly issues so my apologies.
Second,I can say with 100% certainty there is no Trojan inserted into the backups created by WP BackItUp. I am not sure why your virus software indicated there was an issue but I can assure you there is nothing malicious in the code base or backups being created. I don’t have the inclination or time to do something like that so I am truly perplexed as to why you would receive this notice from your virus software.
If you still have the backups that caused the virus notice then I would love it if you could submit them to virus total(a google subsidiary) which will analyze them for free using many different virus detection applications. If you do this then please share the findings back on this post.
Additionally, The entire code base is available on www.remarpro.com for review and is reviewed fairly regularly by security experts who notify me directly if there are concerns anywhere in the plugin. Our only goal at WP BackItUp is to provide a simple and reliable backup tool for the WordPress community. We work really hard to do this for both the lite and premium version we offer.
Next, we do offer support to our lite customers so I am not sure why you think we do not. We do put a higher priority on our premium customers emails but we respond to everyone, regardless of version. If you take a look at our reviews you will see that many customer mention they are using the lite/free version of WP BackItUp and are thankful for the wonderful support they received for free.
Please feel free to submit a request anytime via this link . We also offer free support via the forums on www.remarpro.com but we often just ask people to submit a support ticket because we don’t want them posting sensitive information about their site on a public forum.
Next, I have had multiple complaints about the multiple zip files. I agree it is a pain, but I did this because the larger a zip file becomes, the more likely the backup will run into memory or performance issues. Adding the single file option is on our to do list but it will be offered as an option that will most likely only work for customers with the smallest sites or higher end hosting plans that provide the resources needed to handle it.
Lastly, I do apologize for the issues with he downloads. I am not sure what is going on with your site but if you are still in the market for a backup plugin then feel free to submit a support request and we will get to the bottom of the issue.

Thanks for the input. I agree, support has been stretched a bit lately. I do my best to support both free and premium customers but we have grown to a point where it has become very difficult for me to keep up with all the requests by myself.Additionally, I am in the middle of adding a backup to dropbox feature and it is taking quite a bit of my time as well. While this isn’t an excuse for letting my support slide, I just wanted to let you know why.
To remedy the situation I decided last week to hire a developer to help with support. He will start next week and will help me with both free and premium support. It is going to take a few weeks to get him trained but once he is up to speed support will be back to our normal high standard.
