I figured this out myself after a lot of internet searching and experimentation.

I had to add %post_id% after my custom permalink setting (pagename) in order to get it to display individual posts

I was wondering if this could be linked to my permalink settings which are set to /pagename/? Im guessing posts don’t get their own pagename so cant load when asked to be opened in full?
