    Hi,
    Yes I finally found Simple Links but all the links I had stored have vanished! And yes, I recently moved back to theme P2 but the list of links I had compiled has gone, I assumed at some point when I updated WP. Also, there was no replacement for what used be caled the Blogroll, so I had to download it and start recompiling links. Grrh!

    Hi Sharvin,
    I access the back end using Cyberduck (or Filezilla). I always update from the WP update page. On looking through the site, I don’t see any ref to automated updating, like turning it on or off. I always assumed you had to actually turn it on for it to work. In any case, I’m not happy with automated updating, it’s just another potential security breach, which is why my hosting co, don’t let me use it.

    Yes, Maintenance Mode turns itself off after a few minutes unless the Update fails. This has happened a couple of times a long time ago and I deleted the temp file.

    PS: My version of wp-config.php doesn’t contain the string: ‘define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false);’

    As I said, I don’t use auto update, I only update manually. This problem only recently started, maybe a version or two ago, hence it’s got to be WordPress itself that’s the problem, not my host, not the server, not anything else. I don’t add new plugins, in fact I’ve been using the same plugins for literally years.

    And if you tell me WordPress doesn’t have these kinds of problems, I’ll scream!

    But I will turn on the debug

    So it seems I’m not alone in this, yet WordPress tells me that the problem is with my site. It’s my plugins or something that’s the cause BUT NEVER WordPress!

    Frankly, I don’t know why I bother to go through this as it’s always my problem.

    Depressing.

    Oh really? I keep ALL my plugins uptodate, I run plugin Vulnarabilites etc. Your telling me that every time there’s a problem I have to go through EVERY damn plugin to find out if, and only if, it’s the poroblem (but NEVER WordPress, oh no, god forbid that WordPress is at fault).

    Steve,
    I’ve been using the SAME plugins for literally years! I always get this response, ‘It’s gotta be somebody’s else’s fault’! I run health check. I use minimum number of plugins, I’ve been running this site since 2010 (on WordPress, 2003 as a handbuilt site). I’m using a WP theme (P2)

    My big problem right now is trying to figure out how to turn off Site Stats!!!!

    PS: try just accessing my home page: https://williambowles.info, as it happens there as well. It first accesses pixel.wp.com, which means what? Stats?

    Hi Steve,
    It happens whenever I try to access one of my Admin functions, eg, Post etc, so I can’t give you a link.

    Steve,
    The problem is that Jetpack tries to be all things to all users. It’s a thoroughly bad idea, but if I disable stats, I have no idea how my site is doing. Is there an alternative that doesn’t use the ‘Church of the Internet’?

    I think I might just disable Jetpack completely. I’m tired of it! It’s real pain in the a**e. It slows my site down and I’m really getting fed up with the moralizing tone of WordPress.

    Hudson Valley: your point being? I been using these forums for 8 years!!! I object to the interception of your note.

    Tedious but I’ll try it. I’ve been using the same plugins for years now.

    Update:

    Well, apparently wp_options is NOT damaged! I think perhaps there’s a bug in the latest version of WP? This from my hosting co:

    The wp_options table on the database liamb2 is fine;

    mysql> check table liamb2.wp_options;
    +-------------------+-------+----------+----------+
    | Table 	    | Op    | Msg_type | Msg_text |
    +-------------------+-------+----------+----------+
    | liamb2.wp_options | check | status   | OK	  |
    +-------------------+-------+----------+----------+

    Update:

    I don’t know what happened but this am, the entire contents of wp-content had re-appeared! Yet yesterday it wasn’t there, I checked with an ftp client. I have no idea what happened nor does my hosting co.
