Many thanks. I deactivated all plugins and the wizard connected properly. I then reactivated plugins one at a time and the issue came from the Really Simple SSL Pro plug in. I now have that one deactivated and everything else reactivated and it is working properly. I have even placed an order through it. thank you for your help. I should have thought to do that myself.

Forgot to mention, I am now connected using the old paypal standard and it works fine.
