Though I had used the Codex to change the URL by hard coding it in the wp-config.php directory this step apparently did not complete the URL change as the codex directions imply.
It was still listed as https://example.com/wordpress1.
An internal script was run to replace it with https://example.com. The .htaccess file within the wordpress1 directory also needed to be changed to reflect this change. Everything is working correctly now.
