Polylang trouble with slider

I am using the Accesspress Parallax (free) theme and am having a problem with the slider. It simply does not appear in the translated version.
The way that it is set up is that you create a blank blog post with a featured image, then assign it a category. Then you go to the “theme appearance-slider” and select the category. All the images from the blog posts that were assigned this category then appear on your slider.
The slider works wonderfully in the English version (original), and simply doesn’t appear in the French version. I put a “translation” in for the posts and assigned them the category, but it hasn’t worked. Perhaps because the slug is slider-fr for the French? I can’t figure out how to change that, since you can’t simply remove the language tag.
Elsewhere it was suggested that you could turn off the synchronization settings for the custom fields. I have no idea what that actually means, but I went to synchronization settings and nothing was checked, so I checked “custom fields”. Not sure if that turned it on or off, but it did not seem to make a difference.
