I think the problem is solved, even in a very bizarre way.

I gave up yesterday and switched off my computer. When I turned it back on this morning and checked here for replies I also gave it another go, and it worked!

Never heard of a WordPress plugin needing a PC restart before lol – perhaps I needed to close the browser window and reopen it. Strange, but yay – I’m in!

    @buzztone Thanks for your reply.

To start with your last suggestion, I dont think it is my e-mail which is the problem. It worked fine until the latest version. Nothing else has changed and my newsletter signup page works perfectly (that goes via mailchimp). The link you supplied basically says it’s nothing to do with Contact Form 7 which works flawlessly (hmm lol)

I havent tried the changing theme thing, but then again, the only thing which has changed was CF7 updating. There are no new updates for my theme, and as that was quite expensive I’m more tempted to lose CF7 than change themes (although a major site update will be coming soon). Again – it’s only since CF7 updated the problem appeared.

Re the Recaptcha 2 – I’m a little confused. I was ‘pushed’ into upgrading to Recaptcha 3 by CF7 for some reason, so now have to install another plugin to downgrade ReCaptcha to work with the plugin which made me update in the first place? It does seem a very clumsy workaround

I was kind of hoping that the author would see the problem and fix it, rather than encouraging me to either install yet more plugins on the site or change my site to suit the plugin.

I’ll consider the theme thing but in the meantime will also look at other plugins for something reliable ‘out of the box’ so to speak.

Thanks for the reply and help

Thanks again Tara – I dont think the developer will be of any help at all from what I’ve been told.

How about rolling WordPress back to 3.5.1 – is that a possibility?

The site has an unusual layout which makes it difficult to use a different theme – basically they were sold a dud from the beginning.

    Thanks Tara.

I’ve worked through your suggestions and changing theme to 2015 reverts it back to normal so it would appear the theme is causing the issue, though it had no issues previously.

The theme was a hugely expensive purchase for my friend who has basically been ripped off. There is no author showing for the theme which apparently was written specifically for her site. Unfortunately there are no updates and no way to get any updates.

Is there any way around this? Her entire site was built on that theme and designed on that theme so she has no way to change theme or update it.

Perhaps there is a way to roll WP back to 3.5.1? Would that work?

I feel really bad about this as it was me who told her that she should upgrade to 4.1 for security and compatibility reasons and it seems to have had the exact opposite effect.

Any help much appreciated – I know very little about this subject lol!

    Thanks

Ok guys – I have been waiting 3 weeks for a reply now and nothing at all.

A plugin with no support is not really helpful, if there is no help at all then I’ll uninstall and review/rate the plugin as not working and no support.

Strangely, following a hack of the servers hosting my website it seems most of the sites on there were then compromised including mine.

Access to my site appears to be via a vulnerability in (crazily) a security plugin!

I am now totally unable to access my own wordpress install and the error given when I try is

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare __hideFooterVersion() (previously declared in /home/colincoo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/secure-wordpress/res/inc/SwpaSecurity.php:41) in /home/colincoo/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-security-scan/res/inc/WsdSecurity.php on line 41

I am currently changing hosting company and then can re-upload a hopefully clean site.

Hi Eli and thanks for the prompt help, its really appreciated!

How do I whitelist the IP address (WP says I don’t have permission even though I am the only administrator) and what happens when my IP changes or I use a connection from a different computer/network?

The IP being referred to isn’t the IP of my site but of the computer/network I am using.

I guessed it was a false positive but by default there doesn’t seem to be a way around it or to install the updates manually?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Colin
