I removed and re-installed the plugin but that made no difference.

Howver, the hosting support came back to me and apologised that my account was limited to 30Mb php memory and it should have been 80Mb.
They would upgrade my account asap.

I tried the backup again and it worked as far as the zip file was there, but a strange result, see below, maybe my hosting was in the process of being changed;

It seems like the problem all along may have been the php memory limit or some issue with the server which has now gone after they changed my account.

Anyway, its all working fine now, thank you for your time, patience and help with getting this working.

Now I just need to get it to sync the zip file with my OwnCloud remote storage..

It was already enabled.
I unchecked it and saved, then cheecked it again and saved just to be sure.
I ran the backup again and it failed as before.
I searched the logfile as before and none of the phrases found.

I forgot to say, I searched the logfile for “Artificial delay”, it not found either.

Tried both edits, it failed both times.

Got the new release, enabled the artificial delay option and it failed.
It showed the Internal Server Error and Backup failed! messages.

I switched back to ZipArchive and tried backup.
It failed and produced an incomplete zip file of around 11Mb.

It seems they are being left over when the backup fails and the option to delete temporary files is not picking them up.

Whilst waiting for the hosting support to come back to me, I had kept trying the backup and it kept failing, but creating the zip file as before. The largest zip file I got to with just 2 exclusions was 35Mb.

Then I got this response from the hosting support;

Thank you for contacting us.

We would like to apologize for the duration it took us to reply back to your email. As much as we strive to respond to all emails within 48 hours, we occasionally experience extraordinary email volume, resulting in delayed response time and for this, we apologize profusely.

Meanwhile, the issue you had with your wordpress site was an intermittent issue due to the limitation of shared hosting. The package limitations restrict the use of no more than:
– 60 seconds of 100% CPU usage
– 128MB of memory
– 16 simultaneous processes

It is common to experience 500 errors intermittently when the package limitations have been exceeded which may correspond to swells in traffic during the day.

I think they took their time because they found a mistake with my hosting package, it should have upgraded from 30Mb memory to 90Mb last year when the servers were updated. I dont think it happened and now they are saying its up to 128Mb.

I ran the backup again, same as before, it failed again but the zipfile is created ok, however it was only 20 Mb size.

I took out the remaining exclusions and ran the backup again. It failed again, but the zipfile is created ok and its now 21.9 Mb.
As before, there is an internal server error message, backup failed message and no email, the backup.active is still there.

If I refresh the backup screen when it failed, it shows these messages and lists the zip file;
