Finally last night I found the conflict, it was the changes to the htaccess file which would have impprove file access security, but I think turned out in compatible with my site in particular.
I was able to draw upon another site I managed to compare the two. The site with the problem was an Addon site (so in a directory withing another site) whereas the successful one was installed alone. I won’t pretend to clearly understand the issue, but after comparing the 2 and remove all the extra rules the plugin added, everything returned back to normal.
Otherwise, I enjoy the features this plugin offers and still run it on the site it has worked on!

Im afraid I’ve had the same problem and i have deactivated everything i can. the images themselves are still on ther server but wordpress cannot locate them
Hi I have the same issue and i do not have the original images on this machine so a fix would be appreciated ASAP
