Check that you have rights to write to the uploads folder… It is the account that the web server is running under that does the writing, so just giving your account or owner permissions to write may not be enough (depending on how your server is set up)…
Try giving everyone write permissions to start with and go from there…

Do you not need a cut down version of your comments.php file (obviously not called comments.php) which you use in the include function??

You might want to start here for information about the wpdb Class…
I’m not sure how this would work with custom tables but it’s worth a read anyway… Alternatively you would need to use PHPs SQL functions…

It sounds like it could be something like a permissions issue, though I would have thought WP should return an error if it can’t write to the DB…
It would be worth double checking that the username in your config file does have write permissions on the DB though…

It all depends of the role of your user…

Can you not just remove any of the comment related bits from the theme you’re using??
You’ve probably got, somewhere in the main index page (you can check all this out in the Admin control panel under Presentation>Theme Editor, by the way) comments_template() and comments_popup_link(__('No Comments'), __('1 Comment'), __('% Comments'), 'commentslink', __('Comments off')) so just remove them… If you don’t have these then you’ll have no need for a comments template page either…

Grrr, OK, you want a link to:
bloginfo('url') "/wp-admin/post.php"

Something along the lines of:
/wp-admin/post.php">Write Post
should get them to the right place (I think that’s what you are refering to, at least)…
