In reply to: Strange Text/Symbol Errorsi have the same problem as end up posting/pasting from a bunch of press releases. if it was just me i could do it manually as suggested above, but i have several others working on the site and it just becomes a pain for us overall. (well, PR is a pain in the first place but that’s a different story).
i thought there was a “kill word” plugin that did this automatically, but i can’t find it anywhere. what i’ve ended up doing is going to Reading Options and changing “Encoding for pages and feeds” to “ISO-8859-1”

In reply to: REQ: Replace WordPress Search with Yahoo Searchfiftyfoureleven.com has nice tutorials on adding yahoo, google & msn searches. i got yahoo to work but the problem was that i haven’t made my blog live yet and so none of the blog pages show up (although my current pages did) — so i guess it’s the same note that igorboog made above about indexing

In reply to: keywords vs tags?well, in case anyone is interested, here is some helpful thoughts on keywords vs tags vs categories from UTW author christine davis via her UTW forum (thanks christine!:)
————–
UTW allows a *lot* of flexibility in the way that you display tags on a post (and ways of displaying all of your tags in a few ways – tag clouds, and histograms and stuff);
It also talks uses tagyu.com to make tag suggestions, which is pretty neat.
You can also view an RSS feed of tagged posts (if you have a posts tagged bananas; you can view an RSS feed that contains those posts)Buut… it’s missing the meta-keywords and search stuff; which is why I’m suggesting you stay with keywords for now, and perhaps switch plugins later.
As for tags vs categories
+ It’s way easier to add new tags on the fly than it is to add a new category
– Categories can be organised into a tree, which can indicate the relationship of sub-categories to one another (and to the parent category)Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Smart link V.2.0 – Smart link pluginsstrangely, when i activate the plugin, it works correctly on single pages but when my non-single pages (home, category, etc) come up completely blank. i tried deactivating many plugins to see if there was some conflict but it seemed the only solution was to not use smart link ??
(obviously something wrong on my end, just can’t figure out what…)

In reply to: REQ: Replace WordPress Search with Yahoo Searchi was also wondering how to replace wordpress search with yahoo or google search. as pnear points out this it’s been done integrated here so it can be done. is it just a matter of putting a link to yahoo and then including some code?

In reply to: Why is my WordPress Blog a blank page?hmm. so do you have the ajax spell checker plugin? it really has to be something like that which you need to take out. seeing how you don’t have access to the sql end of things, i would ask your support guy to delete the current “wp_options” table (ported from your original WP) and ask him to put the other newer one (unaltered from setup) back — pretty sure your site will work then. then you just have to redo all your plugins…

In reply to: Why is my WordPress Blog a blank page?i found the problem! AJAX SPELL CHECKER! i have no idea why, but when i moved this one into the plugin folder i got the white screen of death again. but then as soon as i deleted it, it was fine!
pet, if you have that one, try deleting it! (i tried to email you, don’t know if you got it…)
