I think it would insert the watermarks in the Administrator panel (wp-admin) and then those watermarked images would be sent to your webpage.

You mean watermarked pictures? Or is there a setting that watermarks them?

now if they are cached in my computer, can I than retrieve a picture without opening a browser window (from cache I presume), or is opening a browser window without being connected to the web, and retrieve the picture? and if I have on of the plugins installed you mentioned, would it at that point insert the watermark or not?

But that may conflict with your perception of when a user downloads the images.

My perception of it is when they are on my site and copy the picture to their computer. that is what I want to prevent as much as possible. of course it needs to be loaded to be viewed. this should of course not be prevented.

The Web is the thing that makes copies of your photos and sends them out for people to download.

No I do not want anybody to download them. just want to protect them.

are you saying there is always a possibility to download them regardless of what you do? in that case is there a way to watermark them as soon as somebody downloads them?

Alternatively how do you make a waterproof case to prove it is your copyright (as suggested by Lorenzo Orlando Caum above)? How do I prove I wrote it and not that I copied it from the thief? Can you register the text somewhere? or?
