Excellent. I’ll give that a go.
    Many thanks.

Excellent. What would that hard code look like? Sorry I’m not a coder.
    Thx

    Any thoughts on this? Anyone?
I’ve found a site that allows adding a custom button, but it’s global – I need to control this product by product. I’ve tried adding a link (to contact page) to the description box(es) but can’t get them to work.

Reviving this on account of new requirements.

So the above “Manage Stock” is getting close to what I want to do. No buttons appear as long as I don’t put a number in the price field. That’s okay – I can address that in the text field.
If I can add a button that goes straight to my contact form I’ll be golden.
    Can that be done ?

I agree. Too confusing. I’m not finding a way to turn off shopping cart for individual products. Is that a bit of CSS code? Or is it possible to change the “Out of stock” text line to say “custom order” in the inventory status choices? Sorry for the rookie questions – I’m a much better furniture maker than web master…

Yes, using a backorder feature is a viable possibility . My only feeling is that when people are shopping you don’t want anything discouraging a purchase. Seeing something “out of stock” might be enough to get them to not read any further.
I may look for another shopping cart sort of plug in that doesn’t have inventory at all for the custom order items ( or us the suggestion above) on a separate page , and then use the regular shopping page for “in stock” items.
Still trying different strategies. Site is offline (localhost) while I experiment otherwise I’d share links. Meanwhile my current site is here to give an idea of the products.

That certainly could work, but would it also remove the “in stock” option for items that I do have in stock?
    Thx.

    Greetings.
A variable product is a possible work around, but what I’m after is a little different.
Most of what I produce (furniture) is built to order. When I set up a product, in the product meta data window in the “inventory” section my only choices are “in stock” and “out of stock”. I’d like to add a third, “special order” or something similar. This way the customers don’t get turned away thinking the product is unavailable. I retain the “click to buy” type of interface I’m hoping to use. Short of that choice , if I could have no status show, yet still have an “add to cart” with all of it’s pricing etc that would work too.
    Thanks.

Yes that is what I’m trying to do.
I have a site built with a theme that I like, but it is no longer supported and is not very mobile friendly. Otherwise I like the way it looks. You can see it by adding harles between the letters C & F of my user name and add dot com. That is my website.
I would like to be able to use other themes.
I would like to be able to keep my existing galleries with their photo captions, order, etc.
I would like to be able to switch themes without having to re-build those galleries for each new theme.
I was told that creating a child theme would accomplish this.
    Is this true?
If so, how do I apply the child/parent settings to the new themes?
If it is not true, is there a better way to go about this?
    Thanks again,
    -C

I’m in a bit over my head here. Not even sure if the child theme will accomplish what I’m after:
I have built a site with a nice but no longer supported theme.
When I try to change to other themes it seem I have to re-build all the galleries and content from scratch.
I was under the assumption that a child theme would allow easier migration to different themes, but now that the child is cleaned up and running I don’t understand how to apply parent settings to other themes.
    Thanks for your help.

Here is what it looks like now after clearing everything below the header

    /*
    Theme Name: MEDIABOOK_child
    Theme URI: https://www.themeforest_child.net/user/wickedpixel
    Author: wickedpixel – wpworks.net
    Author URI: https://themeforest.net/user/wickedpixel
    Template: wpw_mediabook
    Description: Mediabook Child Theme
    Version: 1.3.2 | 18 Nov 2013
    License: by themeforest.net
    License URI: by themeforest.net
    Tags: minimalism, focus
    */

With this .css file saved I now get a child theme in the manage themes ,but it is blank (with grey checkerboard) and does nothing.

This may be the problem. When I created the child .css I copied the parent .css and changed the few lines in the header that related to the child. Should all the rest of the content (core structure, etc) be eliminated?

Quick question. Is the wp-content/theme folder located on my local machine (and from there uploaded to my hosting account) or is it already on my host’s server and accessed through the cp?

I understand the concepts, but creating .css files is over my head. Can I copy a previous .css and edit? I assume the wp-themes/content is a folder I created with the downloaded theme files in it? Where may If find more basic instructions on WP architecture?
    Thanks.
