I was able to solve the issue to my satisfaction. My solution is below. If anyone sees anything wrong with it or has a better one, feel free to post.
I created a function in my child theme’s functions file modeled after twentyfourteen_post_nav. Then using the codex as a reference, modified the parameters in get_adjacent_post, previous_post_link, and next_post_link. Then in single.php I called the new function.
