I think editing the image direct in the post in the block editor has solved the problem. When I enter the text in the media library and then upload the image, it does not capture it.

So, I will use the block editor going forward.

    Thank you for your help.

I think I may have figured out something yesterday, but it still is mysterious.

Before, I was saving images to the media library, and I was adding alt text as I saved each image to the media library. Then as I was writing a post, I would just drag and drop the image in, thinking that this already entered alt text would be picked up by the Yoast tool.

It seems that Yoast may not like that approach. (Or maybe I was doing it wrong the whole time)

When I did this a different way, which was to just drag the image in and then enter the alt text at that point in the block editor, Yoast seems to have recognized the alt text.

So is the lesson here that I should not worry with entering alt text at the media library stage because Yoast will never pull data from the media library?

As for the theme I am using, I’m not sure it has anything special with regard to images or content building. I know it is not considered one of what’s sometimes referred to as a “page builder.”

I understand the dilemma with search engines. I’m not asking to be at the top, as I know that takes time.

What seems very illogical and makes no sense at all is that when my website is searched, it lands on the About page. I have enough content on this site so it doesn’t make sense why this is happening.

This just looks confusing and unprofessional and I’m stumped. I’ve got a menu section with “home” as an option so this really shouldn’t happen.
