If I disable the menu editor plugin, it works normally

It’s a homegrown theme that is an offshoot of twentytwelve with some bootstrap. It was my theme’s addition of extra editor buttons for ease of access to short codes. It seems there was a syntax change way back in wp 3.9 and I never noticed until now.

well it turns out it is my theme. It’s worked for a few years then all the sudden it’s not. I haven’t updated my theme. I wonder what’s changed in wordpress?

Nevermind. I updated to the newest version of PHP and all is well.
