The issue was down to a secondary script running in the header.php file which was trying to query the old database.
Once I changed this, the problem went away.
Thanks Esmi
I have done just that, and will report back if they can shed some light.

Sorry for delayed response – been out of the office for a week.
Changing the management page URL to /comment-subscriptions-9999999 worked for me.
Thanks for your help!
Just read the bit about the management page URL following permalink structure. Our permalink structure is custom and set to: /%postname%-%post_id%/
Could this be the issue?
The management page URL is caravanguard.co.uk/news/comment-subscriptions (the one getting a 404)
We have Platinum SEO plug-in running too.
Yes it’s enabled
It’s caravanguard.co.uk/news/

Thanks, MichaelH
I have done this and all seems to be working.
Can’t see any tables in the database though. Assume this is normal and if the blog works, all is set up ok.
Thanks for your reply, but what wordpress tables?
There’s so many files, I’m not sure which ones I need to add to the database.
