In reply to: Install probs, really confused!i forgot to add that when I typed in the domain name of my pal, it was on gotonames that I did so, and got that error message.
@neotutorials, there wasn’t any means to enter my username and password, since the server will not allow me to open any files online. As I say, it’s very odd that I can edit files, and yet I can’t OPEN any of them.
See more details here
Can you provide me a link, please? ??

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!I feel like a detective, of sorts, lol-
I typed in sea-meets-sky.com on the “find domain name” dialog and it gave me this:
Invalid Domain format, only Alphanumeric characters are accepted and – no space, hyphens or periods.
It’s nuts that I can’t ask my friend whose server I’m sharing what the name of the host is. Her Dad seems to be a non-approachable person!
Well, this is not an emergency, I can set up WP somewhere else. I just wanted to take advantage of the shared space which has been available to me for a long time. I feel that my site (or, sites) would be a little bit more secure if placed there. Although as we all know from experience, online nothing is sacred!

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Yeah, what fun, huh? LOL
Well, this is really getting strange.
When I first transferred my WP over to the subfolder/subdomain/whatev’, it was put right into the root folder. I didn’t see any public_html directory as I have seen elsewhere and been told we MUST use. My friend said it wasn’t important. Hmmm.
Since the new upload was obviously in the main root and I was even able to EDIT files, it was bizarre IMO that I could not OPEN any of them, in order to do the usual final “official” installation (which if I recall we do with the index.php).
So, my next move was to create a public_html directory all on my ownsies. Then I moved the whole kit & caboodle over, into said directory, with renewed confidence that this time, all would be well. But. Still. No way, Jose. Gettin’ stranger and stranger.
I have WP installed elsewhere (different host), and at that location it was placed in the provided public html folder. I got easily in, did the final install, and Voila’.
Therefore, I am not sure what options are left?
My friend is no help at all, she has no patience and won’t cooperate. I’ve quit asking for her aid, I’d rather not get my head bitten off again. And yet, oddly, a few years ago she was the one to introduce me to the wonders of WP…
Wish I knew exactly what host she is using. I’d delve into the mysteries and even try to contact somebody there, to find out something about why this is proving so difficult, when it should be a snap.

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!I have no idea, bh_WP_fan; in fact I’m not even sure what DNS is! lol-
On the shared server, I don’t have an url for the blog yet, since I can’t get the index or login files to open.
Let me get you a link so that you can (I hope) see what’s going on. Without me having to download Skype which, as I say, might not do well on dialup…
Actually it’s a sub-domain, but whatever… ??
My friend named her domain sea-meets-sky, and here is the link to my persistent error message:

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!I did create a public_html folder and moved all of my WP files into it, but that hasn’t helped either, still that same persistent error message…
I don’t have Skype and I’m not sure how well it would work on dialup… Is there any other way to view someone else’s directory? Seems my friend told me about something, can’t remember what it was.

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Hmmm, well, I say it’s worth a try! Now I have to figure out how to create a public_html folder; hoping it’s as simple as creating any other directory. ;\

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Something else–when I hover over the link that should open a file, it says, “This link may not work if you don’t have your own domain name.” That can’t be the cause of my problem, since in the past I was always able to get in.

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Yes, it is in the root directory. And as far as the exact host, strange to say I do not know; the person who is sharing the server is a 22 year old college student whose father is paying the yearly fee. It’s probably something like Bluehost, but even she says she doesn’t know. I wish that she would ask! I’d ask him myself, only I’m in Indiana and they are in Tennessee, too far away, lol.
Well, here is the 404 error msg I keep seeing, if this would give any clues:
Not Found
The requested URL /wordpress/wp-login.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Do you have wordpress installed and can you log in admin panel.
Is there any way you can post your url see what you are getting. It’s uploaded to the server, but I can’t do the final install since I get a 404 error saying none of my files exist on the server. Which is why I remarked that it’s weird that I can get in to edit them but I can’t actually open them online. Can’t bring up the login page or the index online. That was what made me suspect a Chmod prob but there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong there.

In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Yup….the folders are indeed 755, and all files appear to be 644.
So, what now?
Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Install probs, really confused!Yes, this is a brand new fresh install…the date is May 29 so I’m certain it’s 3.1.3. But I could download it again, just to make certain sure.
Anyway, I’ll look again into the files and let you know what I find. ASAP. I suspect the problem has a simple answer that I just need to get at…

In reply to: New question = blockquotes problemFound the answer, at least a workaround. A forum member advised me to go here and tick or un-tick as needed:
PageLines Settings>Blog and Posts>Post Excerpt or Summary Handling

In reply to: New question = blockquotes problemNope, not yet…we’re fixing, or trying to…. ??
Arrggh, dang it. I did what you advised and I am still getting the same duplications, as for example =

Found the PageLines support forum and apparently other people have had some similar issues:
Forum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: New question = blockquotes problemI think you want your blockquote under your image?
Ok, that would be fine, whatever works and doesn’t look weird, lol.
why do you style the blockquote in two different stylesheets?
Not exactly sure what that means, but if it’s meant as rhetorical, yeah, like I say, whatever works is great.
Frankly I’m not sure what would happen if I did futz with the blockquote on two different style sheets. I am somewhere between a n00b and an intermediate user ?? So, if I just deleted the blockquote in common.css, and put the addition into the style.css, it would behave itself as needed? I hope? I seriously LOVE this theme, better than any I’ve run into thus far. Just about perfect, so easy to use…save for this one little problem.
[Edit] I’m on ‘common.css’ right now and don’t see BLOCKQUOTE, Q anywhere at all. So, I’m for shifting over to style.css and making the addition advised on there. Should be adequate for my needs.

In reply to: Question about stylesheetOh, yes it did install perfectly once I chose the inner folder and just ftp’d that one. However….as lovely as it is, I’m lost over exactly how to make it behave for me… Hmmm and Hmmm… I’ve always had trouble with custom menus, grrr.
