The topline news is that installing the Gutenberg plugin fixed the issue. Indeed, it is a better fix than the one suggested previously–adding the CSS as suggested above caused galleries to always be displayed horizontally. This worked well enough on desktop, but in small browser windows and on mobile this looked incorrect. With the Gutenburg plugin installed, everything sizes/arranges itself correctly regardless of the browser window size.

Besides that, here are your answers to the other questions.

Will there be a point at which I should uninstall the Gutenberg plugin?

Just checking, are you saying I should try removing the CSS I just added? When I do that, the site (and the live preview) immediately reverts back to the vertical column of photos. It’s instantaneous.

Otherwise, are you saying I should get rid of it in the figure.wp-block-gallery.has-nested-images class? If so, can you tell me how to do that? (Sorry–I’m not especially savvy with how CSS works)

Oh wow–that worked perfectly. I simply added

.is-layout-flex {
	display: flex;
}

in the “additional CSS” field (under Appearance>Customize). Now everything seems to be back to normal. Thank you!

Hi @darerodz — I am using the Hestia theme, and am looking into that potential fix you sent. The issue does indeed seem very similar to mine.

Thank you very much for your help. It turns out a plugin caused “Add Expires Headers & Optimized Minify” was causing the problem. I have deleted it, and that fixed the site, I think.
