In reply to: Backup database vs. backup server contentOk thanks. I don’t have any problem doing this manually right now (using WP backup plugin and FTP client).
I’ve only got a few megabytes worth of information but I just had such a bad “newbie” experience earlier on where I lost my (then barely used) blog. What bothered me was not losing the tidbit of information but rather that I don’t know what I’m doing just yet and don’t want to break it again…
Thanks again, everyone here is very helpful.

In reply to: Backup database vs. backup server contentOk thanks. I’ve been looking through the WordPress_Backups pages. Hopefully I’ll never need to do a full WP re-install but if I do, can we confirm that what I’d need is:
1) My database backup as produced by the backup plugin
2) All the files of my WP root downloaded via FTPSo theoretically if I’m gathering these files, compressing them into a ZIP then I’ve got what I need to do a full exact reinstall should my server die?
Thanks and excuse me but I’m very new to PHP, MySQL, everything really.
(One thing I don’t quite understand is why I can FTP ALL the files from my WP root but STILL need to backup the databases…is that to say that FTP doesn’t have access to the databases? MySQL is invisible to FTP?)

In reply to: Edit post = layout ruined? (Kubrick)It’s confounding in two ways:
1) I’m just using WordPress to make a post within WordPress and later edited using WordPress –yet somehow things get screwed up.
2) Some of the XHTML “errors” (like an extra space within tags or something) aren’t reflected when I edit the post, even using the HTML button.
Well, I’m just glad I didn’t have to do any major fixes.

In reply to: Edit post = layout ruined? (Kubrick)While we’re here, is that normal? I mean why would a singe post screw up a layout?
Possibly related subject: I used the “XHTML Validator” link and it came up with a bunch of errors, several of which (redundantly) referred to the “bunk” post in question.
???

In reply to: Edit post = layout ruined? (Kubrick)Looks like it was a “bunk” posting…? I changed said post into a “draft” (therefore not displayed to visitors) and everything seems to be fine…

In reply to: Changing URL: Need to alter WordPress installation?Update: My WordPress installation has become broken beyond repair. I’ve used various backup methods (manually and using the “Skippy” plugin) and none of my restores have been successful.
When typing in my blog URL it gave me a bunch of jargon, some of which was indicating problems with a plugin that rotated graphics (again, still making old URL references).
So I’ve wiped the slate clean and am going to reinstall WP 2.0.2
Now I’ll have to search to see if I can restore some entries from an older installation.
But my blog was pretty new so I’m terribly concerned with it at this point –pain in the butt but I’m learning ??

In reply to: Changing URL: Need to alter WordPress installation?brittanie: Thanks, I did find an exra line (space) in post.php, so I’ll see if it works better after having deleted that. The wp-db.php was fine, however, but we’ll see.
However no one thinks it odd that I still show the old URL in these references? I did everything as required here: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/ and for the most part my installation works fine.

In reply to: Changing URL: Need to alter WordPress installation?WAIT A SECOND: I got this error message when I was tinkering about with my site. I replaced the actual URL with “OLD_URL”, to indicate that this is no longer my current URL. Obviously something somewhere is making reference to my old URL …?? Everything else seems to be working great and this doesn’t happen every time. Again I’m not exactly sure how I got it to do this.
” WordPress database error: [Lost connection to MySQL server during query]
INSERT INTO wp_postmeta (post_id,meta_key,meta_value) VALUES (’18’,’_encloseme’,’1′)Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/content/e/n/a/OLD_URL/html/wp-includes/wp-db.php:102) in /home/content/e/n/a/OLD_URL/html/wp-admin/post.php on line 122 “
Oh and this is what was in the browser address field: “https://www.NEW_URL.com/wp-admin/post.php”

In reply to: Changing URL: Need to alter WordPress installation?Well thanks everyone –I just checked my work from last night (to give the DNS servers, etc. time to catch up) and it all worked fine! My new URL works with my WP installation AND my old domain forwards to the new one just fine!
Thanks again ??

In reply to: Changing URL: Need to alter WordPress installation? Thanks for all the help so far. This has spawned another question, however. I’ve been using a backup plugin “WordPress Database Backup” by Scott Merrill.
Would a backup like this restore my blog to ANY URL with ANY webhost?(Of course performing the modifications as mentioned by LesBessant)
In otherwords, does a backup like this contain the data (posts, CSS, etc.) to restore my blog theoretically under any hose/URL situation? Or does it simply reinstate the data under a pre-existing WP install?
Thanks again!

In reply to: Changing URL: Need to alter WordPress installation? Can I have one WP installation with two URL’s pointing to it, like an HTML website?
Just curious…
