Thanks for that Kathryn and it’s good to know that you have Jetpack installed on your localhost.

I’ve written to JP support and will let you know how it all goes.

    Cheers for now

    Hi Kathryn

    This is;-
    the buddypress.php under: wp-content>edin-child>page templates –
    https://pastebin.com/CvqXSYi6

the full-width-page.php under same path to page templates –
    https://pastebin.com/VY4wpMAw

I have been through them several times but they seem identical to me which is very odd – particularly as buddypress.php starts off with ‘Full width page’ Plus the buddypress.php says nothing about ‘get sidebar’ which all the forums suggest is the way you get full page buddypress by deleting that code from the default sidebar page, but there isn’t one! – please see snaggy screenshot below.

I went further exploring and found under wp-content>plugins>bp-themes>bp-default>page.php
    https://pastebin.com/dtWpGYzn

I have tried substituting this last one for the buddypress.php – first one in list, but to no avail.

What I have done though is gone right back to the start and created a new forums page on full width page template and with some fiddling managed to get it full page on site – yippee! – but as soon as I go down to the next level and pick a forum off the index list the page defaults to the sidebar showing page.

If I delete everything from sidebar obviously everything in Buddypress then shows full page. However I want/need sidebar for posts and some other pages, which in page templates is shown as default page on wordpress dashboard when selecting the type of page but there is no ‘default-page’ template under the theme page templates and so I think it just picks up the third one I’ve pasted which is from the Buddypress default theme which I didn’t think existed anymore, although obviously that got installed as bp-default.

Probably totally confusing you now but what baffles me is where is wordpress getting its default php from for the default page if selected – for adding ordinary page in that format and not necessarily buddypress?

Screenshot of default option page when adding new page
    https://snag.gy/p6ZlD.jpg

and here is the list of page templates available in the edin-child theme
    https://snag.gy/VsdJJ.jpg

So – Kathryn, on re-reading this must sound terribly confusing for you and whether it’s a Buddypress or theme issue I really don’t know.

Forgot to say – when you choose and publish default page it works absolutely fine – where the php info is though, I really don’t know!

Unless there is something fundamental I’ve missed that you pick up I think I may have to live with it.

Again thaere are countless threads/posts/webpages and sites devoted to the Buddypress one page problem but the little devil is still out there and causing problems.

As usual I really appreciate your time.

    Kind regards
    Rob

    Hi Kathryn

Thanks so much for getting back again. I actually tried your suggestion over the weekend, but again with no joy I’m afraid.

I have read a lot of threads on the Jetpack support threads and the consensus is that it is extremely difficult to get Jetpack installed on localhost due to a whole variety of reasons, one of which is that it needs to be in the public domain. I think that means fiddling about with the ports etc.

Anyway, I think I’ve exhausted my attempts and will do as much else on the site that I can and get it hosted. Then I will attempt to install Jetpack again – hopefully it will then work. That is not what I really planned as I wanted to make sure everything was functioning properly before external hosting – Bluehost or Hostgator. Incidentally, which one do you think is best at the moment? I know that there is a constant marketing battle between the two. My wife had a Bluehost blog – started about 5 years ago but the quality of support which had been excellent deteriorated markedly in the last 12 months or so.

I also had an old WordPress.com blog – not used for several years and I changed the theme to Edin so I have been able to see the difference in the widget selection, so I really hope the current one HelpMeHelpMyself can have some of those incorporated with the external host with Jetpack.

As far as the logo and social icons are concerned at the moment I have
downloaded a couple of widgets and am currently trying to get the logo into the header area being very careful with copying and saving all original coding etc etc while I try to move it there. The widget is putting the logo below primary menu at the moment!. I have removed the search toggle and box to create more space and will put a search widget somewhere else.

Finally, can I say that your support and help has been brilliant. I’ve also noticed your positive responses on all threads with which you are involved. That makes a real difference to the users – so a big thanks on behalf of all of us in the ‘how the hell do you this or that club’.

With this thread I’ll wait to hear if you have any further comment, but if not then I’ll mark it as resolved because I honestly think that I’ve spent as much time as I can trying to resolve the Jetpack/localhost issue and there is still a lot more work to do on the rest of the site. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and don’t like to be ‘beaten’ on anything but I think one has to know when it’s time to move on.

Once again – thanks – and I’m sure there’ll be other times when you’re giving me advice!

I’ll also drop you a note on the other thread ref Buddypress.

    Kind regards
    Rob

    Hi Jan
    Thanks for further help.

From a lot of research I think the Jetpack problem may well be because of wamp local server. A lot of people seem to have probs with it. There is a development mode which requires amendment to the wp-config file which I’ve done, but to no avail on trying to install Jetpack again.

I’ll also fully research getting the widgets to function in the theme.

So – I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into trying to solve the issues – thanks very much.

I’m just going to keep going until I get it cracked.

    Kind regards

My second reply obviously crossed but thanks for info. I’ll try it.

On Rachel’s https://simplymilkco.com/ please see bottom of her Home page – she has used two that are not on my WP.org Edin theme – ‘Instagram Roll’ and ‘Top Posts & Pages’. The Archive widget also has a different format – clickable links rather than dropdown menu. The WP.com Archive one to me is far more professional looking. There may be others available that I am not aware of. As you can imagine I am a little loathe to write and ask her for the full list.

    Hi Jan

Thanks for reply. I did come back to you within a couple of minutes but it is not appearing, so I’ll reproduce it in essence – didn’t keep a copy on notepad as usual. Apologies if in the meantime the first one comes through.

I used edin.co edin.org for speed so please excuse any sloppiness!

I’m fully aware that the social icons are on WordPress .com theme because of the Jetpack integration – hope that’s not the wrong terminology! – and that Jetpack is needed for Edin on WP.org. I posted topic yesterday about ‘logo and Jetpack’ as it will not load for me as explained in topic; I just wondered if others had experienced similar probs as I know sometimes Jetpack can be difficult to load up.

Are there any other bits and bobs which Jetpack comes with to enhance the Edin theme on WP.org? If there are a number I may have to keep trying until I can get it to install. If I cannot get it to load I’ll have to use logo and social icon plugins – but don’t really want to if I can avoid it.

However, the widget query is far more important to me. Do you have any info on why the difference choices available, as I pointed out between Edin WP.com and WP.org and if there is likely to be an update to include widgets on WP.org which are far more up to date eg Instagram Roll rather than the bland list on the WP.org theme at the moment. I have to say it surprises me as I really like the Edin theme – clean, sleek, professional looking and pretty good on customisation but something as obvious as widget choice difference between the two themes is baffling.

    Regards.

    Hi Jan

    Thanks for quick reply.

I was only using edin.org and edin .com for speed and so sorry for any sloppiness!

I have already raised a topic ref Jetpack yesterday – ‘Logo and Jetpacck’. It won’t install – please see that for how I’ve tried to get round it eg deactivating all other plugins etc etc. I wondered if anyone else had similar problems on this theme as I know that Jetpack is not always straightforward to load. I know the social icons are not part of the theme. Obviously the social icons appear on Edin on WordPress.com as Jetpack has been part of the development. So to answer your question that’s what different.

However, do you have any info on the widget question which to me is far more important – why the different choice on WordPress.com and www.remarpro.com? -. done in full to avoid sloppiness!

    Profuse apologies Jeff

Had already looked in widget area on WP dash but it was obviously a ‘man look’ as my wife says. Went back there a few minutes ago – Of course – it was there.

Sorry again – and keep up the good work.

    Kind regards

Kathryn – just for info, I have written to Buddypress support. In the meantime I’ll keep trying different things as this is so frustrating!

Hopefully from the 3 screenshots below

you can get an idea of what I’m trying to put right. As you can see there is a third column on right hand side – basically a sidebar which is like the default page but I need it to be full page without the sidebar.

Please also excuse the content/avatars etc etc – only put in for testing at the moment.

I am going to post on Buddypress support as well, but this appears to have been a problem for some time and the solutions always seem to depend on php files and how they are configured in the roots.

Sorry – couldn’t use media library as obviously only on local host – so used Snaggy – very quick.

I will do further research tomorrow on you being able to see my wamp – I know it’s possible, just a bit complicated to set up and config security and access, as I don’t want full internet access as will be corrupted in seconds.

Anyway – thanks again – nearly 1am here in Italy and so will say goodnight. Be in touch again tomorrow.

On forgot to say – please let me know if s/shots are any good or if they need doing again with more detail – you just say.

    Cheers, Rob

Kathryn – thanks for replying so quickly. By getting it up on a test server, do you mean by getting direct access for you to my wamp localhost?

I’ll also dig around on the net for some info and I do appreciate you trying to help although you’ve not used Buddypress before, but the Edin theme really does lend itself to creating great community and social blogsites.

    Cheers, Rob
