In reply to: [Theme: Twenty Eleven] Search excerpt breaks listsI’m sure folk had a reason to go with that as default. It’s always bugged me, but hasn’t really had a harsh impact til now, with this “every post is a list” situation.
cheersp.s. “Advanced Excerpt” did what I wanted straight out of the box; no downside seen yet. ??

In reply to: [Theme: Twenty Eleven] Search excerpt breaks listsQuite right; is just what I meant by “locally”.
And yes, theme specific. Was surprised to see such a change in basics. Thanks for the pointer … spot on.
p.s. do you happen to know a theme that would preserve list format in excerpt? (I really do think that should be default behavior. I see “Also in the latter case, HTML tags and graphics are stripped from the excerpt’s content.” so this is evidently a design decision.)
Addendum: this article in support hits a lot of major points: “How to modify the_excerpt“. see also Advanced Excerpt plugin.

In reply to: Obtaining an API for my Blog(Sure wish there was a Reply function here.)
I spoke too soon; no joy.
I still get “WordPress.com Stats needs attention: please enter an API key or disable the plugin.”
When I read “let other WP users see your stats” I backed away.
But that’s just an option.
So I went ahead and added it to WP.com. Like I should have from the start.

In reply to: Obtaining an API for my BlogSame here.
Actually I pushed it a bit and hit a wall: the Stats from says “If you want to use a different account, please enter the correct API key.” with a link. But the link just points right back to that same page.
Work-around: deactivating and re-activating reset the key so I could enter the one I wanted.nice work folks!

In reply to: [Plugin: WordPress Beta Tester] FAIL after activationFinale: “Update server rewrite rules” entailed replacing wp-content/blogs.php with wp-includes/ms-files.php in .htaccess … an error-prone step, but things seem well.

In reply to: [Plugin: WordPress Beta Tester] FAIL after activationSync. I just came back to add “Upgrading to 2.9.2 now”.
Added 2 nonce lines to config and things are running fine. (Since this is critical, shouldn’t it be mentioned on the Plugin page?)I should have mentionned: running this on WPMU as per Testing the automatic upgrade to WordPress 3.0
Okay: T)ools, Beta, Bleeding edge. Saved.
T)ools Upgrade: “You are about to install WordPress 2.9.2 in English.”
That’s confusing
“Download Nightly” points to /nightly-builds/wordpress-mu-latest.zip
That’s confusing too.
“Automatic” installed that file. Isn’t latest MU 2.9.2 (which I had just installed)? That’s what footer reads.
“Click on Dashboard Icon” … poof, magic.Uh-oh, another nonce to add to config.
Should I leave the 2 from WPMU? for a total of 3?Okay, updated Network w/o obvious problems.
Let’s say everything is fine. I’m going to need a walk-through on this:
“The wp-content/blogs.php file is deprecated. Please remove it and update your server rewrite rules to use wp-includes/ms-files.php instead.”Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Plugin: WordPress Beta Tester] FAIL after activationI renamed the plugin and restored access to Admin. (Sure wish we could edit items here.)
I just upgraded to 2.9.2 … everything was working fine before.
I click “Dashboard” in Admin and get “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”This wasn’t a manual upgrade. This was 1-click. Like I’ve always done.

In reply to: Can’t import WordPress WXR filesCan someone say when Import was working last?
I was hoping WXR would be the magic bullet …
… my import from LJ “worked”, but it turns out that a lot of posts are missing, so I have to re-do from start.
(I posted on -hackers … got reply from 1 guy but basically no sing of interest.)FWIW some guys are working on GCode: https://code.google.com/p/google-blog-converters-appengine/ but only Blogger => WP so far.

In reply to: No Templates in Edit Page Template is missing???This was odd.
I just changed theme to Hemmed (no Ajax?) and heh no template to apply to pages.
Not sure the ins/outs/whys/wherefores but I duplicated pages.php as template.php and followed the instructions from Codex “Pages” and HeyPresto, the template choice appeared in Manage Pages.
Different cause; different fix; same problem.

In reply to: ExtJS WordPress ThemeI’ll stay it stright out: I’m biased in favor of ExtJS, so I love this theme and the functions it brings. see https://bentrem.sycks.net/blog/ (Just my tweets … it’s a bit of a sandbox.)
But as folk are saying in the ExtJS forum thread, there are some problems with this approach: that it’s heavy and for many readers slow-loading is the most immediately obvious.
I’d love to work on optimizing this, but then the fact remains that pages don’t get spidered. (How to work through XHR is more than I can handle!)–bentrem

In reply to: Static Front Page link to PostsIf you mean by “So now where do I link to to get the default “all posts” index?” what I think you mean, I just got the walk-through from Rove in a similar thread. (Beware of moshu; he’s looking for excuses to shout at people!)
For the record:
Thing to do is create an empty page with just the title you want.
On Options > Reading select Static, then FrontPage to your choice of page (which I guess you’ve already done), and then set PostsPage to that page you just created.
And that does it as well as I’ve found.Worked for me. (Except the fact that now there are two links to FrontPage, which was my comment / question.)

In reply to: HELP, posts are showing up on my front page@rove from the site it looks like kardworx has things sorted, so I’m going to risk hijacking this thread; re-direct me as required.
The page I want folk to land on (FrontPage aka Home) already exists, so I skipped your step 1.
A little quibble with your step 2: when you write “a page called …”, you mean “titled”; its nice when what we see matches the instructions. (Easy for you? Very glad to hear it. But I’m dealing with frustration/confusion just ATM.)
Things work immediately but break down right away.
On bentrem.wordpress.com I had Blog, About, and Page3. I created a page titled Blog Posts. In Options > Reading I selected Static, set FrontPage to “About”, set PostsPage to “Blog Posts”, and viewed the site.
Goodness: Home defaulted to About. Goodness: BlogPosts displayed posts. Goodness: Page3 is happily blithe.
But then *Whaaduh’aey?!* I see that there’s that 4th tab … the original “Blog” tab remains.A new tab was created for BlogPosts; fine.
No damage that “About” still has it’s own tab, since in this test case things are a little confounded.
But this 4th one? That’s the sorta brain-damage stuff I diss other people’s work.Doesn’t matter what things are called, you still end up with 2 tabs pointing to the same spot. (For my money pages should never point to themselves, so this is actually doubly wrong, but I won’t go there. Not right now.)
The same is true about karworx’s https://tellurideblog.com/ but on his/her site it isn’t so painfully obvious since his links are in the sidebar.
RFE?
Whatever page is set as Static FrontPage should have itself removed from the listed pages.
