  • Karen, how do you backtrack to 2.23?

I left a note Rickard on the support forum – the styling change is a HUGE issue for me and all of the client sites I have this on –

The change took away the coloring options (which everyone loves) and now it looks like the WordPress tag cloud with those floating tabs (horrible).
If anyone liked that look, I would just use the wordpress tag cloud. ??
We loved yours BECAUSE of the flexibility of its appearance.

At this point I just need to know what I can do to change it back on this client site, I cannot upgrade it on any other site that is using it if this is how it has to look.

Please, is there somewhere that I can download 2.23 so I can fix the client site?

Same here Sassafrascal – never ends … on and on … til you kill it.

    Hi Hehafner,

This is mind twisting – so frustrating …

WF can handle blocking any ip, that is not an issue.

WF Advanced options can handle blocking IP ranges, also not an issue, so the line by line code for IP ranges isn’t necessary. WF handles that. In fact, it’s cool because you can see in it, how often the IP range tries to return and when.

I’m not trying to block any browsers – I don’t want to block any normal human visitors.

I’ve not had any errors with WF advanced options – though, in the example of this particular bot there is no way to block it via a user agent as it uses all available browsers – & it has multitudes upon multitudes of ip ranges – they seems endless.

(I am spelling it with spaces so it doesn’t get picked up in a search)
    Am azon AWS

So… questions – when you say “For rewrites you would write”

    1. what is a “rewrite” and why do I want to “rewrite” something?

When you say “each time I get attacked by botnets I have to update my ban lists.”

    2. Where are you calling or referencing the ‘ban lists’? Do you mean that you are adding them in a single module, per each bad bot, as in your code demo above? ….IN htaccess?

You might want to look at this page too –
    https://www.askapache.com/htaccess/modrewrite-tips-tricks.html

It’s a lot of good info about writing for Apache –

    As for me –
I wish I could just SEE a real example of a modified htaccess file FOR WordPress with a block added for ONE botthat behaves as I explained. No more – no less…. Then I could better understand how to apply any of the other modifications without messing up the WordPress version.

    *SIGH* (???)

    Hi hehafner,

I think in the last 2 posts I said that I am already using WF ?

It works great, I have no issues with it – but as discussed need to “append” the htaccess file – there are bots that change their IPs regularly – and there aren’t ways to get their ranges because they go around them …

I have looked into Better WP Security but have also read a few things about it, namely, conflicts with it and WF. If you use it, you’re supposed to install it first – (too late and I manage more than one site) – Also, the Warning from them on the details page of the plugin, discusses the changes made to the core database >> Better WP Security – I’d rather avoid this and just append the htaccess file. Then, No Worries….

With that said, I really appreciate the time you took to write the above coding, and I’ve read similar on sites like this >> https://www.onextrapixel.com/2011/11/03/unleashing-htaccess-for-wordpress/ what I don’t understand and NEED to understand thoroughly, is how these additions are added to the preexisting WP coding

Some important quotes from the above links state things like…
“disabling word wrap”, “Avoid redundant codes that might result in an infinite loop”… etc – a lot of great info.

What I am not understanding yet, is how any of these modifications are supposed to be correctly added to the EXISTING WP coding that, as has been pointed out – not to edit.

Do you know what I mean? I can find the modules of code to do this or do that – but I need the proper syntax – as it is supposed to be added to the code that is already in the htaccess file

    Hi RobinTexas,

Thank you for your efforts – but I’m really hoping for a tried and true method, and not one that hasn’t been tested…

I know this can be done and is done as I’ve read it all over the internet, though since it isn’t info directly from WordPress, I’d prefer to learn how to do it properly from WordPress –

htaccess isn’t anything to mess with … I am certainly not going to test my own ip and lock myself out – I do have, as I mentioned, Wordfence software in which I can block per IP – but for bots like the one i mentioned, that is futile. I need to do it through htaccess – and need to learn how to do so properly from someone that is highly familiar with htaccess with WordPress installed.

To my knowledge, Wordfence does not provide those lists, though those lists are available I know – but I STILL need to know how it is supposed to be written iN CONJUNCTION with what is inherent in the htaccess file aleady (as per above)

    Thanks!

Thanks anyway, somehow the problem corrected itself. (shrugs)

    Thank you Alexander –

Since I’ve used this theme for client sites, I have to be sure that I don’t over write customizations. I’ve recently been trying to create a child theme for it (on my own site for testing it) but so far can’t get that to work. I sent a message to another WP theme developer that helped me out in the past, to see if he can tell me where i may have gone wrong with the child theme – (so that I don’t have to worry about clients updating etc and overwriting those customizations!)

    Hi Rickard,

Yes I did send you a message back with the details about the .js file and to be honest I seriously do not appreciate a private conversation being posted on an open forum. That’s a serious invasion of privacy and I’m very glad now that I didn’t go into more detail. BUYER BEWARE!

I’d appreciate it if you would remove that and you can keep just the info up that you needed which is the info about the js file. You really should know better than that.

    Hi ctrople,

Yes we talked about that on that forum (that was me in that discussion)
Paperclip found the workaround, by removing a line of code in the fucntions.php (but the downside of that is upgrades would overwrite it) so he fixed it as a child theme – but THEN the issue of the lightbox feature, intermittently working, then not working came up because as soon as you use mosaic for your gallery – (AND if you are using Pinterest) the Lightbox doesn’t work and the largest pin doesn’t pin.

If you want to be able to click on an image, it goes directly to the media file – or when you go to ‘pin’ an image (and naturally you want the larger image to ‘pin’)… it doesn’t work – it pins whatever size the mosaic displayed the image as. (and I’ve had users pinning my media file as a link instead of posts now)

    It’s gotten quite convoluted…. ??

    Hi alchymyth,

Yes I am using Jetpack but tried disabling it to see if the ‘enable’ came but it didn’t – I’m using Pinboard and I wrote them on their forum to inquire if there is an incompatibility and no, I didn’t try to disable “all” plugins, but I do keep the ones that I have at a minimum and had read that Jetpack has caused an issue or two, so .. so far, just tried disabling that.

Also, I checked on the .com forums and on my .com test site and it DOES display there and works there….

    Thank you.

I tried the css fix and that works – I don’t believe that I have any conflicts as I only have basic installs & on purpose – so I’ll go with the CSS fix for any pages that I have to utilize this format on. (Most are normal posts and I have no issues.)

    Thank you so much ?

    Yes, I can, thank you.

You will notice the pin count is 1K – this is coming from the post –
“Elie Saab Spring Summer 2013 Ready to Wear”

Thankfully I found this – I found the same thing, the entire post inclusive of all images (full size) are being sent to the subscriber! That’s crazy. I don’t want that and yet i don’t want to lose subscribers I’ve established. What to do?

    Hi

I’m having a different issue. All of the social media features are displaying as they are intended to however, the Pinterest button opens to a page that is displaying a 1 pixel image.

I thought perhaps this feature is buggy so I disabled this and installed Share This. Pinterest button works on Share this BUT only displays the logo from the site and not the images from the post.

I’ve also tried the Pinterest “Pin It” Button, Pinterest Image Pin, and Pinterest Pin It Button For Images. NONE work.

The other odd thing is that I normally use a Pin it add on for my browser and I can right click any image and have a “Pin Image” option. On this WordPress version/template I am using (per the clients requests) that option is NOT available to me on this particular blog.

I am pulling my hair out – Please help.

So many thanks to you again Emil … I certainly didn’t mean to ruffle anyone’s feathers – I just wanted to leave feedback with my rating.

Also, I hope that you checked your donation box ??

Many, many thanks. You saved me a world of headache.
