In reply to: [Audio Player] [Plugin: Audio Player] Buffers … but never playsUPDATE: I uninstalled it and reinstalled the plug in. I made sure there was nothing under the “default directory” in the settings and tried again. Now it seems to be working fine. I changed my rating to a 5-star. If it continues to work as it has the last day, it is the perfect way to embed a small mp3 player on the site.

In reply to: [Category Shortcode] [Plugin: Category Shortcode] Fatal error messageThanks so much for the response and the info, Netjera. I’ll definitely keep it on file for future reference!
In the meantime, however, I tried a different shortcode plugin that worked so I’m using it instead.

In reply to: [List category posts] [Plugin: List category posts] Thumbnails didn't workI was having the same problem, but when I changed it to thumbnail=yes, I got a fatal error.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function has_post_thumbnail() in /home/content/c/h/i/chirobooks/html/wp-content/plugins/list-category-posts/include/CatList.php on line 195
Oh, drat! Have you ever had a loud clunking noise in your car … but it disappeared the minute you drove into the shop to have it checked?
Well, that’s what happened. I **SWEAR** to you, I tried again and again before posting this message the other day — and it ALWAYS happened. I’d include the excerpt, and the share/save button vanished. I’d delete it, and the button returned. Both sites!!!
Today, I tried again, and it’s working. On both sites. So, either you, micropat, are incredibly powerful and by simply answering my message you got it to work, or there was some glitch on my server the other day.
As the late, great Gilda Radner would say: “Never Mind.” (and thanks anyway!)
By the way, same thing happen on Deep Blue (different blog site, different theme)
The theme is called Arjuna by SRS Solutions. I’ve tried a variety of different theme options, but nothing works. I put an excerpt, the share/save button disappears. Take it out and voila … it’s back.

In reply to: Who are all these "new users"?I use Akismet and no one is leaving any comments, spam or otherwise. I went ahead and turned off the registrations and hopefully, that will put an end to it. Thanks for the tips!

In reply to: What are subscribers?keesiemeijer …
Thanks for the info, but I’m still a little confused. How do people “subscribe” to my blog? I do not have any kind of registration set up, yet all these people are showing up as “subscribers” in my WP users list. If they’re not subscribing to my RSS feed, what are they subscribing to?
Sorry for being so dense, but I still don’t get it.

In reply to: TwentyTen – can I select pages to show in menu?Oh! I thought that was just for additional “custom menus” under the widget section. But I played around with it and now see how it works. Thank you so very much for your fast (and accurate) response. I really appreciate the help.

It’s amazing how one simple mistake can throw you off….

In reply to: Permission error when trying to upgrade?I am such a newbie at this I shouldn’t be allowed to reply to questions, but I figured out a similar problem on my setup and maybe it will help someone here as well.
I read that the CHMOD function does not work on Windows based hosting accounts — only on Linux. I have a Windowss hosting account with GoDaddy and it took me some time but I found that going into Account Manager >> Hosting Control Panel >> Manage Account >> Content >> File Manager leads me (finally!) to a place where I can set permissions.
I put a screenshot on my site.
Of course, if your server is hosted with a different company, the process may be different, but perhaps this will help lead you to the right place where you can change the permissions.
By the way, once I changed the permissions to “read” AND “write” for the site, I was able to make backups, upgrade my WP program, etc. with no problems. As soon as I was done, I went back and changed the permissions back to read only.
Hope this helps!

In reply to: Did I back this up correctly?YIKES! I did what you suggested and looked at the backup file and it’s huge — with a lot of stuff that I didn’t post (I only have a ‘test’ post and comment of my own). It appears like there are other posts there from other blogs. I guess it picks up stuff like the posts from the “development blog” etc., right?
Despite the crazy looking code, it looks as “sane” as anything else relating to a computer does, so I guess the backup is okay. Whew!
The GoDaddy function makes backing up the database real simple — just hit the ‘backup’ key and it does it and tells you where the file is. Then I used my ftp program to make a copy to my computer.
I guess I was concerned because it didn’t seem as hard as the various posts made it sound.
Thanks for you response and assurances. I’ll breathe a little easier now.

In reply to: What’s the 1st thing I should look for in a theme?doranpalmer — Thanks! I didn’t realize it was so easy to change. I guess I’m thinking back to the old FrontPage themes and templates where you were pretty much “stuck” with one design unless you re-did the entire site.
Okay, now all I have to do is look through 768 or so themes! YIKES. What have I gotten myself into?????

In reply to: What’s the 1st thing I should look for in a theme?>> What is your goal? Just a hobby or more professional?
Hmmmm … do I have to choose just one? It’s a blog about a real “passion” of mine that I hope will be of interest to others and make me some money as well.
I guess what I need to know is that, based on other people’s experiences (usually their mistakes!) is it best to choose on the basis of one particular criterium, such as color or banner placement, or just pick one that visually appeals to me and worry about the other stuff later?
