It very well could be a permissions issue on the server make sure the wp-logon.php is set correctly. What permission levels do you have it set to E.G 777 or 646.

Are you using the WordPress Default 1.6? If you were to drag a widget into the sidebar 1, Do you get any error or does the theme change?
