Yes, it was a plugin. On deactivating my Wordfence security plugin, the profile page is now loading completely. Now this is a plugin I have to keep, so I’ll appreciate it if you have any suggestions as to what might cause the conflict (both plugins have coexisted on my site for a long time without problems) and possible workaround.

Already solved. Downloaded the latest version on local device and manually uploaded to site via ftp, overwriting previous files. Went back to the site admin, and the plugin successfully activated.
