The sitemap.xml is not a file. It’s a “virtual” endpoint generated by Google XML Sitemaps.

If you have created a robots.txt file manually, you need to update it, but if you are using a default robot.txt file, it will be added automatically.

With the latest version 4.1.1, we have disabled WordPress core sitemaps in favor of Google XML Sitemap due to the flexibility and additional features our plugin provides. As some individuals have mentioned, we recommend avoiding adding any code and merely upgrading the plugin.

Would you be able to confirm if “Include posts” is selected under “Sitemap Content”?

Today, after Google XML Sitemaps is set up, you need to submit the index sitemap to Google Search Console manually. After that, our plugin will do the rest on his own.

Great question!

With the latest release of core sitemaps in WordPress 5.5, WordPress provides its users with a basic version of XML sitemaps. At this time, there are a few customization options for sitemaps. That’s why in our latest release of Google XML Sitemaps 4.1.1, we have disabled WordPress core sitemaps in order to allow our existing and new users to take advantage of our robust sitemap offering.
