For anyone searching for the same/a similar issue, the answer may be to just wait for things to cycle. It took a full week, but the count is finally consistent with the Jetpack subscribers count. I’ve no idea what happened, but wasn’t something that anyone maintaining the site did!

Apologies for the long delay (the hosting company made for fresh issues). All looks just fine now. Thank you all for the fix and the great plugin!

Calendar now definitely works fine under php 7.4.33, 8.0.28, 8.1.19; WordPress 6.2.2; The Events Calendar 6.0.13.1; Fairy 1.3.9, Twentyseventeen 3.2, Parabola 2.4.0.1.
