I deactivated the Prevent Direct Access Gold latest version on 2 of the 3 problem sites directly through the Word Press Admin dashboard. Immediately all of the page formatting issues, freezing and critical errors went away. The site returned to normal so there seems to be some problem with Tuesday’s update. (13/08/2024)
On one of my staging sites I was unable to access the Word Press dashboard to deactivate Prevent Direct Access Gold. The only way I could switch it off was to go into the CPanel File Manager and rename the prevent-direct-access-gold folder to old-prevent-direct-access-gold. Now the staging site opens quickly with all page formatting, spacing and font issues solved. But it is impossibly to access the Word Press admin for that staging site, either through navigating to the Word Press Admin login page or by using the WP Staging Pro plugin section of the main production site. Prior to Tuesday’s update on the Prevent Direct Access Gold plugin the login had worked fine.

Most of the plugins I am using are paid plugins and fairly mainstream. Until now I have been fortunate not to have experienced critical errors like this week. I am still using the Classic Editor and the Make Plus paid theme which although older still seems fit for purpose with other plugins on the site.

I hope this information helps anyone else with similar difficulties.

@snapbackcap Thank you for sharing this information with me. I appreciate it.

@buildwps Thank you for your reply. I will try to contact you later today through the Contact Form you linked to.
I hope there is a resolution to this problem soon. And I wish when problems are identified that developers would let users know early, especially paying customers. Many of us are not high level IT experts so it is extremely painful and time consuming to diagnose which plugin causes problems in a site.
And I I hope going forward that BWPS will make it easier for paying customers to start a support ticket “premium” support using at least their name, email, licence number and description of their problem. Many other companies’ premium support forms allow initial contact on an incident this way. The fields and drop down boxes in the BWPS Premium Support contact form are likely designed to get as much information as quickly as possible to understand the causes of the problem and offer efficient support. However when customers have to go through over a dozen input fields, many of them required and they might not have access to all of the information immediately, it can feel somewhat like an unfriendly slap in the face and not ‘supportive’ at all. It becomes just another roadblock in an already frustrating and time intensive process.
I will be in touch about the problems on my site with a list of all my plugins that I can find out later today. Thank you again.

Thank you, I will start a separate post.

I have the exact same problem.

The Lockout emails simply do not arrive. Other emails generated by Wordfence do. Updates on the site bulletins arrive, alerts to my main Wordfence user account arrive. But from the same wordpress@mysite ONLY the Lockout emails do not arrive. Nothing in the Spam folder. Nothing in the Junk folder. Nothing.

I have tested this on my site mutiple times.

The time stamp of the lock out screen and browser cache match fine.
From Wordfence Support I received a polite but unhelpful generic reply about emails from wordpress sites. They told me to contact my hosting provider. I did. We have checked email settings in the CPanel, DNS records and reinstalled the core Word Press files.

The Unlock emails do not work. They do not arrive. They used to (the last time I remember was about a year ago.)

I am using: no SMTP plugin
    WordPress version 6.3.2.
    Wordfence 7.10.5

If anyone can provide any suggestions as to what to try next it would be very helpful.

    Hello again @moinrrahmed

I installed the ?Show modified Date in admin lists plugin and tried it on 2 sites where it works fine and does exactly what I wanted. The problem is solved.

    Thanks again! ??

Okay, thank you very much for sharing this. I will try it out.

Though I hope the WP coders will soon be able to have this feature included in the WP admin by default.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

Thank you for the quick and clear posting of the information. I was able to find the setting check box easily.
Have turned off auto updates for now and will be backing up manually before updates.
When auto-back up works it is great. But as said before I have had too many occasions when things went wrong with it. Don’t know if this is specific to my set up.But is good to be able to toggle it on and off like this.
(Of course other simple way would be to activate and deactivate the plugin itself as needed.)
Anyway, thanks again and much appreciated.

Thank you @bcrodua Bryle for your kind reply.
I am happy to have the link to the Premium Support that I can use.

Now I have managed to restore my site after some hours of FTP upload.

But I remain disappointed and irked that this sort of issue happens with Updraft Plus as often as it has in the past few months.

8/10 times things seem to work as they should with Updraft Plus.

But on the three occasions when I have really needed that Restore button to work it hasn’t. I have ended up restoring the site through a time-consuming FTP upload, then only being able to restore the database from within the WP dashboard.

And more frustrating is the likelihood that that Updraft Plus backup itself seems to be causing issues –?not the updated plugins.
There have been three recent occasions when updating three different plugins I lost the site after performing a plugin update + automatic pre-update Updraft Plus backup.
It seems that the more secure way to avoid the aggravation of losing the site seems to be to perform a back up using the Back Up Now button. And only then updating the plugin
    when this is completed.
But there seem to be issues with Updraft Plus’ automatic pre-update back up that cause it to fail too often than I have the time and patience for.
My site is hosted in a robust set up with good support who have had to help me sort this out too often now.

I hope there will be some improvements to rectify whatever is causing these problems soon.

Thank you very much for posting such a detailed reply and so quickly. I really appreciate it.
The problem did not lie with the plugin so I must apologise for any aspersions cast in my post.
The update has completed after I restored my site.
The Custom Post Type UI plugin now works as reliably as it did before even with translated versions of custom post types in three languages across the site.
It seems to work very happily with WPML still. And I am very happy about that because without it I could not manage my site in the way I want.

The problem I had was caused by an issue with another plugin, Updraft Plus.
And this is not the first time to have this happen. When I updated the Custom Post Type UI plugin to its latest version I took a back up of the site using Updraft Plus. And after the automatic backup there were issues with all of the posts. But as I wrote after restoring the site the Custom Post Type UI plugin updated instantly and now causes no problems on my site.

Once again, I am sorry for seeming to blame the Custom Post Type UI plugin. So I want to post this for the record and to reassure other current/future users of the Custom Post Type UI plugin.

Thank you for your kind reply.
    I appreciate the quick response.

This must be a problem with my particular set up.
And I am relieved to hear that there are not larger numbers of other users with similar problems.

I have already opened a support ticket, but thank you for the link.
So I look forward to speedy resolution as soon as possible.

Am now having to restore my entire plugins folder via FTP which will take hours.
I managed that with the first site today.

Please will someone confirm from Wordfence when the latest Wordfence update is safe to use?

I am going to deactivate updates and automatic updates until they post something about this or reply to my Support Ticket.

Had been quite happy with them previously but am not impressed with this experience at all: paying for licenses on a product that ruins my site and wastes hours of time.
There is no other explanation other than the fault is with their update. Nothing else was changed on either site that could have caused this problem.

Yes, me too. Complete site meltdown yesterday, front and back end.

Thank you for your kind reply.
And thank you for updating the plugin for us so we can continue to use it with the latest updates.

I am very happy to keep using your great plugin on my site.
It has helped me a lot.

If you put a Paypal Donate button on your plugin page I would be happy to donate to your work, to help keep costs of keeping this plugin going.
It is wonderful that you have provided this great tool to us for free. But let us know where we can donate to you if you can.

Wishing you all the best for 2020!

    Thank you very much Michael.
I had exactly the same problem and wondered if I was going to have to slash and burn through my other plugins to sort it out.
You saved us all a lot of time and stress so thanks for posting this insight!

CPT UI is a very handy tool so I wish all health and wealth to the developers in the future.
