I was right. Nothing to do with the plug in or the cup of tea.
I had removed accidentally removed a theme folder from /wp-content/themes.
(this done when uploading to my remote server)
So – when the screen goes blank and no error messages appear your site is probably looking for a theme that isn’t there.
