In reply to: Design Contest thread 2Form v Function is a big debate we could have all day – personally I would take function over form normally but when the challenge here is essentially about form then I would have to go with that – or have i got the wrong end of the stick completely.
What is the function of John Does blog? I don’t know; only John Doe knows that and therfore John needs to decide his own form v function balance. Persoanlly speaking, My blog is about me having a rant about politics and putting things I’ve found so the friendss and family that visit can also find them – I also use it as a dumping ground for some links – as I tend to use a variety of computers so don’t have access to my bookmarks all the time – so If I was to design for me I’d go for a two column design (a variety of these designs I’ve done before for WP with a slightly modified index…so not eligible for this comp but worth a look if your interested…)

But with this comp – I’d be really disappointed personally if all we ended up with were the same old two column designs – I think we should try to push the boundary just a little.

Does anyone know if Konqueror includes the latest KHTML code changes implemented by Safari? If it does, I’ve got linux installed and it might be handy to get an idea as to how Safari renders the pages – being a poor student I don’t have a MAC to play with.Forum: Themes and Templates

In reply to: Design ContestDave, your right mate there is a complete lack of any handy div’s etc that would make this actually useful/easier…the closest I’ve got to a three column one with the markup as is…
https://www.lineages.co.uk/chris/comp3/index.htm
Not an entry merely me just seeing if I could do this – This can’t be the only way to do this (???) any thoughts guys.
# menu is fixed width, #menu ul is fixed width in such a way that only 2 #menu ul can fit on a row causing it to wrap using float left giving the appearance of a 3 column design – probelm is you don’t use the space effectively (you lose the equivelent of ul padding on the right) Limiting the size of the center block. – You also get scrollbar is width of window is less than #menu width although the text filling the spot won’t go that far over.Forum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: Design ContestI’ve worked out how to do a three column design with content in middle and menu’s flanking both sides but at the mo. its looking really rough – I’ll post it whem I get it vaguely sorted.

In reply to: Design ContestLiquibyte – I agree it would be much better if each individual menu item existed in their own div – but the aim of this thing is to see what can be done with changing a thing – I’m going to try a three column design next – I think the limitation will be that the two menu columns will need to be side by side – but I’ll try to think about this.

Thanks to Craig (NuclearMoose) for helping me with a CSS problem – it now works as expected in IE5, 5.5. 6 Firebird 0.7 Netscape 7.1 on WinXP (so I can’t take all the credit).
Standard template from WP 0.72 GOLD used. – only CSS used as requested
If anyone finds any problems please drop me a line (the internal links won’t work as I saved the default page as produced by index.php as an html file so I could host it outwith my document root – basic posting text has been changed for some lorum ipsum to help me see what was happening a bit clearer)

In reply to: Unwanted horizontal scrollbarCraig mate
Its got rid of the Moz Scrollbar – Thanks it now works as expected in IE5, 5.5. 6 Firebird 0.7 Netscape 7.1
Image is only 30.7K JPG I wonder why your getting it soo big??? – the server I’m on is shockingly bad which may explain the download times.
Cheers again – McChrisForum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: Unwanted horizontal scrollbarNo matter what I change the width to I see the same problem so I don’t think its content size thing per say – block level items should be the width of their container – in this case #menu and the table for the calender isn’t a problem as its width is only about half the width of the #menu.
The only thing I could think of is that the padding and margins are in someway mucking up the site – but setting them all to zero has done nothing – I’ve even tried setting the width of the ul and li below #menu to 90% width of the containing div and it still does itForum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: Unwanted horizontal scrollbarThe menu block needs to fit inside a specific sized block to the right of the screen hence the fixed height and the 512px thing and – now the content fits the box but – no matter what size I make the box In Mozilla I still get a horizontal scrollbar where I don’t wan’t it
