I may not have mentioned that I am using the WP Simple Auction plugin and all of my “alex” products are of type “Auction”. So I created a non-auction product with category “alex” and it has appeared on the Alex page.

I think the issue is with the auction type products, even when they’re in the right category.

Oops sorry, didn’t answer your 2nd question. The page containing the shortcode displays nothing.

hi, I don’t have pretty permalinks set up so it is

testsite.com/auction/?product_cat=alex

and all 3 alex products do show up. But I am attempting to put those products on an “Alex” page rather than a category so I have more control over the appearance.

I don’t know how to get a permalink structure as you described but that’s another question!
