In reply to: [WooCommerce] Spinning wheel on checkout@htdat, thank you for replying. I discovered that http on the checkout page was indeed the problem. I set Woo to force https on checkout and so far the problem has not returned.

In reply to: My editor is broken@macmanx, could you please clarify why my post above was removed and then restored? If I violated a forum rule I’d like to know what it is to avoid doing so in the future. Thank you.

In reply to: [Disable Gutenberg] I’m not saying anything fishy is happening..And my best guess as to “why” is that they did not like you mentioning an alternative to the Classic Editor,
My thought as well. There have been enough missteps in the Gute rollout that I am not in a very trusting mood with WP.org these days. As a further example, in the past week I have witnessed auto-update from 4.9.9 to 5.xx without explicit permission-something that is NOT supposed to happen–twice, on 2 different hosts, neither of which has ever auto-updated major versions. I am investigating further to make sure that this is indeed what is going on.

In reply to: [Disable Gutenberg] I’m not saying anything fishy is happening..FYI, I posted on a thread two days ago (“My editor is broken”) and recommended this plugin, with a link. My post was removed the next day. I’m not saying something “fishy” is going on–it’s possible I have violated some forum rule or TOS–but I don’t think so… ??

In reply to: [Gutenberg] How do I float an image?I figured out how to float an image. Turns out the alignment controls for the images are in a toolbar at the top of the editor. However, the alignment buttons for text are in the sidebar “block” tab which is where I was looking for them.
Why is the Block Alignment in the sidebar for text, and in the top toolbar for images?
The UI for this editor is really quite confusing. There are at least three places I have to look for controls: the top toolbar, which is minimal and context-specific; the sidebar tabs (Ugh, this is just horrible) and the three little dot thingy that seems totally superfluous.
Oh, there’s another three-dot thingy hiding up in the corner, I just found that… I’m not going to go into any more analysis if the UI here, I’ll work it up into a review.

In reply to: [Gutenberg] How do I float an image?Hi there, let’s see about getting you some help here. You should be able to click on an image, like this:
There is nothing after.
When I click on an image all I see are four dots (resize handles?). The Block submenu only includes the following options:
- Alternate text
- Size
- Advanced–Additiona CSS class
Nothing else.
I am using Firefox 57.0 on macOS 10.12.6 (localhost), Gutenberg 1.7.0

In reply to: [Gutenberg] Problematic to say the leastJust to address the point about backwards compatibility. It’s hard to say what will happen at this point, but some form of graceful approach to legacy would of course be attempted.
Weasel-words. “Hard to say”? “attempted”? Is that supposed to be reassuring? Developers are being told to test plugins and themes NOW and be ready for rollout with 5.0, even though there is no roadmap or specifications.
I saw this constantly over at WP.com forums with the “Beep Beep Boop” fiasco… confused and upset users trying to find out WTH happened to their editor… and getting nothing more than “there, there” pats on the head, assurances that everything will be worked out… somehow, sometime. Then threads are closed, disappearing into the vast emptiness of WP.com’s execrable forums.
WP.com has infected the open-source ecosystem of WP.org, replacing a transparent, user-focused product with a profit-driven, opaque and managerial approach that will benefit no one but Automattic’s investors. Bye Bye WordPress, it was a good run.

In reply to: [Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth] Why was omnisearch removed? Thanks @skippy. I just looked at the link that @jeherve had provided as an “alternative” –a standalone version of OmniSearch– an abandoned plugin that has not been updated in four years! No wonder it’s breaking your sites.
And I agree that Jetpack is “becoming more unusable with every upgrade.” I simply won’t install it any longer for clients due to two reasons: crapification of the UI and features being removed without warning. If I can’t rely upon a plugin to be stable and user-friendly I won’t force my clients to use it.

In reply to: [Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth] Why was omnisearch removed?Omnisearch has indeed been sunset and removed from Jetpack entirely. If you’d like, you can use this standalone version of the plugin instead.
From the announcement of the feature June 2013:
Omnisearch: one search box, global results. Don’t waste time digging for that one comment with the useful link — or was it a post you saw it in? Search once and get results from all of your posts, pages, comments, and plugins.
Well that was fun while it lasted. A really useful feature, killed without notice. I love how its removal was listed under “Enhancements” in the changelog for 5.3 :-/

In reply to: [Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth] Why was omnisearch removed?Revisiting this thread…
OK, so I installed the latest update (5.2.1) and went looking for Omnisearch again. I went to Settings and entered the search term “omnisearch.” The results returned the following:
“Omnisearch
Search your entire database from a single field in your dashboard.”There was no way to find or activate this module from Search. I clicked the little “i” icon for “Learn More,” clicked the link and got a 404 on https://jetpack.com/support/omnisearch/
We STILL need to click the tiny Debug link to find a link to the list of all modules.
This is garbage UI, frankly, and the fact that it persists speaks volumes about the terrible design direction WP is moving in. Calypso breaks existing workflows and functions and no one seems to care. The chaos of trying to work between Classic and Calypso (because you still can’t do everything in Calypso) makes working with WP an enormous pain in the behind. If I weren’t maintaining legacy WP sites I’d say goodbye to the platform forever. So sad!
